Know This Engine Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:

  • Confirm the 8th digit of the VIN is 'G'.
  • Verify the option code 'L96' on the Service Parts Identification label.
  • Confirm the vehicle is on the approved fitment list.
  • Check oil pan and accessory drive configuration, especially for commercial van applications.
🔎 Where to look: The 8th digit of the VIN must be 'G'.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

12 to 20 hoursshop labor1500 to 3000typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced to ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Heavy-duty engine hoist and load leveler
  • GM Flywheel Holding Tool (EN-46106 or equivalent)
  • Harmonic Balancer Puller/Installer (J-41816-A or equivalent)
  • Fuel Line Disconnect Tool
  • Bidirectional scan tool (capable of performing CASE Relearn)
🔌 Wiring harness: The engine wiring harness must match your vehicle's specific year and options. It is highly recommended to reuse your original engine wiring harness to avoid pinout discrepancies.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Fresh OE-spec 5W-30 engine oil (Dexos1 approved)
  • High-quality oil filter (ACDelco PF48E or UPF48R)
  • Fresh Dex-Cool coolant (50/50 mix with distilled water)
  • Intake manifold gaskets
  • Exhaust manifold gaskets
  • Oil cooler adapter gasket/seal
  • Front and rear crankshaft main seals
  • Water pump gaskets
  • New double-platinum or iridium spark plugs (gapped to 0.040")
  • New spark plug wires
  • New thermostat assembly
  • New serpentine accessory drive belts

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration✅ Nodealer tool needed✅ NoECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Crankshaft Position (CKP) Variation Relearn (CASE Relearn)

A Crankshaft Position Variation Relearn is mandatory after replacing the engine. While a high-end professional scan tool can initiate the relearn, a GM dealer scan tool is the most certain method.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Oil Cooler Block-Off Plug / Thermostat: Verify the plug is torqued and sealed properly before installation to prevent immediate oil leaks.
  • Oil Pump Pickup Tube O-Ring: Ensure the correct thickness O-ring is used and not pinched during installation to avoid low oil pressure.
  • Torque-to-Yield (TTY) Bolts: The harmonic balancer and cylinder head bolts are TTY and cannot be reused. New bolts must be used with precise torque-plus-angle sequences.
  • Exhaust Manifold Bolts: Factory bolts are highly prone to breaking; replace them with high-quality bolts and use anti-seize.
  • Grounding Straps: Clean all engine ground locations on the block down to bare metal to prevent electrical issues.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Reusing the Replacement Engine's Fuel Injectors (LY6 vs. L96 Swap): L96 Flex Fuel injectors are larger than LY6 injectors and will cause rich running conditions if the ECU is not reprogrammed.
  • Assuming AFM/DoD Compatibility: The L96 does not have AFM. Dropping it into an AFM-programmed vehicle without disabling AFM in the tune will cause severe running issues.
  • Using Cheap Aftermarket Sensors: Aftermarket crankshaft or camshaft sensors often fail immediately; reuse original OEM sensors or buy genuine ACDelco replacements.
  • Failing to Perform the Crank Relearn: Assuming the job is done without performing the CASE relearn, leading to a persistent check engine light.
  • Ignoring Broken Exhaust Bolts: Installing the engine with broken exhaust manifold bolts, guaranteeing an exhaust leak.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every engine of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

moderateTSB PIP5276G (Low Oil Pressure / SES Light with DTC P0521)2011–2019

🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect and clean the oil pressure sensor screen located beneath the sending unit, check for a sticking oil pump pressure relief valve, or inspect for a leaking valve cover baffle.

severeTSB PIP5258A (SES Light with Camshaft Actuator Code P0011)2011–2019

🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect oil pressure at the sender and check the number 2 camshaft bearing for wear, which feeds oil pressure to the VVT phaser.

moderateExhaust Manifold Bolt Failure (TSB 01-06-01-011I)2011–2019

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace broken bolts with high-quality bolts (such as ARP stainless steel header bolts) and use anti-seize on the threads.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 300-15760-5573283). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
