Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Verify the 10th digit of the VIN is 2018, 2019, or 2020.
  • Verify the 8th digit of the VIN is '5' (designating the 5.0L V8 Coyote engine).
  • Confirm the truck is a 4x4 (Four-Wheel Drive) model.
  • Check the Safety Compliance Certification Label on the driver's door jamb under 'TR' for code 'G' (10R80 transmission).
🔎 Where to look: Locate the barcoded sticker on the driver's side of the transmission case to confirm the part number prefix matches (typically starting with JL3P or JL3Z).

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

6 to 8 hoursshop labor900 to 1600typical shop bill, on top of the partExpert OnlyDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • High-lift transmission jack with safety straps
  • Ford transmission line disconnect tool (Rotunda 307-569)
  • Engine support fixture or jack
  • OEM-compatible scan tool (Ford IDS/FDRS, FJDS, or FORScan with J2534 OBDII adapter)
🔌 Wiring harness: External wiring harness is not included. Ensure all connectors are clean and free of debris before mating.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Ford Mercon ULV (Ultra-Low Viscosity) fluid ONLY (Ford Specification: XT-12-QULV)
  • Transmission filter (Motorcraft FT-215 / L1MZ-7A098-A) and filter-to-case seal
  • Transmission pan gasket
  • Front pump/torque converter input shaft seal
  • Driveshaft seals
  • Quick-disconnect cooler line seals (Ford 5L7Z-7D285-A and 5L7Z-7J324-A)
  • Professional heated back-flush of the transmission cooler and lines

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

What’s involved: Solenoid Body Strategy and ID Programming + Adaptive Learning Relearn

The installer must program the replacement transmission's unique 12-digit Solenoid Body ID and 13-digit Solenoid Body Strategy (found on the driver's side case sticker) into the truck's PCM/TCM. Skipping this step will cause incorrect hydraulic pressures, immediate harsh shifting, slipping, and severe clutch damage. A precise Adaptive Learning Drive Cycle must be performed post-programming.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated (three distinct clicks) and spins freely by hand before bolting the bellhousing to the engine block to avoid crushing the internal front pump.
  • Sticker Photo: Take a clear photo of the solenoid strategy sticker on the driver's side of the case before installation, as it is extremely difficult to see once installed.
  • Fluid Level Check Procedure: The 10R80 has no under-hood dipstick. The fluid level must be checked via the standpipe plug on the passenger side of the case while the engine is running, the truck is perfectly level, and the fluid temperature is at 206°F to 215°F (96°C to 101°C). Checking cold or with the engine off results in severe under-filling.
  • Cooler Line Seals: Replace the quick-disconnect cooler line seals to prevent leaks, as they flatten over time.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Skipping the Solenoid Strategy Programming: Assuming the unit is plug-and-play, which leads to immediate violent shifting and clutch failure.
  • Using Mercon LV instead of Mercon ULV: Using the wrong fluid viscosity causes severe shifting issues, overheating, and internal failure.
  • Incorrect Fluid Level Checks: Checking the fluid cold or with the engine off, leading to running the transmission 2 to 3 quarts low.
  • Failing to Flush the Cooler: Reusing the existing cooler without a heated back-flush, which pumps debris from the previous failed unit directly into the replacement transmission.
  • Ignoring the CDF Drum Issue: Purchasing a high-mileage used unit without verifying if the CDF drum has been updated or inspected.
  • Resetting Adaptive Tables as a Fix: Attempting to clear adaptive tables to resolve mechanical wear issues like a failing CDF drum.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect and replace the CDF drum with Ford's redesigned part. Symptoms include harsh shifting (especially 1-3 and 3-5 upshifts), delayed cold engagement, slipping, or loss of gears.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-10403-5557904). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
