The 6R80 does not have an internal TCM requiring VIN-matching, but you must program the replacement transmission's unique 13-digit Solenoid Strategy Code and 12-digit Solenoid Body ID (printed on the case tag) into the vehicle's PCM. Driving without programming this code will cause extremely harsh shifting, slipping, and immediate internal damage.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- Torque Converter Seating: Must rotate and push inward until it fully engages with three distinct clicks. If not fully seated, bolting the transmission to the engine will crush the front pump gears.
- Bulkhead Connector Sleeve: Prone to leaking fluid onto the external harness. Replace with a new OEM sleeve and O-rings while the transmission is out.
- Fluid Level Check Procedure: No under-hood dipstick. Must be checked from underneath the truck via a 19mm cap on the passenger side front of the case with the engine running, transmission fluid at operating temperature (190F to 215F), and the truck perfectly level.
- Adaptive Learning Reset: After programming, the PCM's adaptive learning tables must be cleared and a specific drive cycle performed.

- Using the Wrong Fluid: Putting Mercon ULV (used in 10-speed transmissions) into the 6R80 instead of Mercon LV.
