Know This Engine Before You Buy
The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:
A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:
- Verify that the 8th digit of your VIN is P.
- Confirm your truck is a Ford F-150 (2018–2020) with a longitudinal engine layout.
- Confirm you are prepared to transfer your existing turbochargers or purchase new ones separately.
- Visually identify the oil filter: look for a black plastic, canister-style oil filter housing located at the top front of the engine on the passenger side.
What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:
Special tools this job needs:
- Rear Main Seal Installer (Ford Tool 303-1250)
- Universal pulley holding tool (like OTC 4754)
- Ford FDRS / IDS Scan Tool
Budget for these consumables at install:
- 6.0 quarts of premium 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C961-A1 (e.g., XO-5W30-Q1SP)
- Motorcraft FL-2062-A oil filter (or FT4Z-6731-A)
- Motorcraft Yellow Concentrated Antifreeze/Coolant (meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B57-A1) mixed 50/50 with distilled water
- 6 new Motorcraft spark plugs (SP-594 or current OEM equivalent) gapped to 0.028 - 0.030 inches
- Upper and lower intake manifold gaskets
- Exhaust manifold gaskets
- Turbocharger mounting gaskets, oil feed/drain line O-rings, and coolant line copper crush washers
- Thermostat gasket
- New torque-to-yield (TTY) crankshaft pulley bolt
- New turbocharger mounting studs and nuts
What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:
What’s involved: Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Relearn, Transmission Adaptive Strategy Reset, and Security/Immobilizer Relearn
A Ford dealer-level scan tool (FDRS or IDS) or a high-end professional diagnostic scanner is required to perform the CKP relearn, reset the transmission adaptive shift tables, and complete the security/immobilizer relearn.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- Turbocharger Oil Feed Lines: You must replace the turbocharger oil feed lines when transferring your existing turbos. Reusing old, clogged, or restricted lines is the single most common cause of immediate turbocharger bearing failure.
- Oil Filter Housing Stem (SSM 47922): Pay extremely close attention to the center plastic stem inside the oil filter housing cap. If this stem is cracked, bent, or missing its O-rings, oil will bypass the engine and drain straight back into the oil pan, causing instant low oil pressure and destroying the engine.
- 10R80 Transmission Alignment: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated in the transmission pump before bolting the engine to the transmission to avoid cracking the pump and warping the flexplate.
- Crankshaft Position (CKP) Relearn: Do not skip the CKP sensor relearn. Failure to do this can result in a persistent check engine light, rough running, and inaccurate misfire detection.
- Crankshaft Pulley Bolt: This is a torque-to-yield bolt and requires a specific, multi-stage tightening procedure. Reusing the old bolt can lead to it backing out and causing catastrophic engine damage.
Easy to get right once you know them:
- Reusing Old Turbo Oil Lines: Trapped debris or sludge in old lines will feed directly into your turbos, destroying them instantly.
- Using the Wrong Oil Specification: The Gen 2 2.7L EcoBoost uses a wet oil pump belt. Using oil that does not meet Ford's strict WSS-M2C961-A1 specification will cause the belt elastomer to swell, shred, and clog the oil pickup tube.
- Improper Oil Filter O-Ring Placement: Forgetting to replace or misplacing the three small O-rings on the oil filter housing stem causes immediate oil pressure loss.
- Skipping the Spark Plug Gap Check: Installing spark plugs straight out of the box without verifying the 0.028 - 0.030 inch gap can cause spark blowout and severe misfires under boost.
- Failing to Prime the Oiling System: Starting the engine without priming the lubrication system can starve the turbochargers and internal bearings of oil on initial startup.
Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every engine of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:
🔎 Recommended at install: PCM software update to prevent false low catalyst efficiency codes (DTCs P0420/P0430).
🔎 Recommended at install: Replace the rear crankshaft seal and retaining plate assembly (service base part #6335) using special tool 303-1250.
🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect the center plastic stem inside the oil filter housing cap during oil changes. If damaged or missing its O-rings, replace it immediately to prevent catastrophic oil pressure loss.
🔎 Recommended at install: Replace faulty engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor or repair damaged knock sensor wiring harness.
🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect the block heater cable and splice connector during the engine swap to prevent short circuits and fire risk.
🔎 Recommended at install: Replace the original RTV-sealed pan with an updated version that uses a press-in-place gasket.
🔎 Recommended at install: Drive the vehicle aggressively (with several wide-open throttle events) for about 30 minutes to de-sulfate the catalytic converters.
Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 300-10375-5558113). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.
Policies, in plain English.
Shipping & Handling
- Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
- Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
- The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
- Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance
120-Day Warranty
This part includes a 120-day warranty.
- If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
- Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
- Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation
Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.
Returns (30 Days)
We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.
- Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
- Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
- Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
- Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
- Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited
Damaged in Shipping?
Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:
- Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
- Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
- Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
- Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery
We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.
Order Cancellation
Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
