Know This Engine Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:

  • Verify the 8th digit of the 17-character VIN is 'G'.
  • Confirm the truck is equipped with the 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission.
  • Inspect existing turbochargers for shaft play, cracked wastegate housings, or oil leaks.
  • Visually confirm the engine is a 3.5L twin-turbo V6 to ensure no prior engine swaps occurred.
🔎 Where to look: Look at the VIN plate at the base of the windshield or on the driver's side door jamb sticker to confirm the 8th digit is 'G'.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

12 to 22 hoursshop labor$1,800 - $4,400typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Camshaft Holding Tool / Timing Tool Kit (OTC 303-1655 / CTA 6680 / Lisle 37230 / Ford 303-1530)
  • Quick-Disconnect Tool Set for fuel and turbo lines
  • Engine Hoist & Heavy-Duty Load Leveler
  • Ford-Compatible Scan Tool (Ford IDS/FDRS or FORScan with OBD Link EX)
🔌 Wiring harness: You must reuse your original engine wiring harness. Ensure your harness matches the 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission configuration of this 2017 engine. Inspect for shipping damage and compare pin-by-pin.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • 6.0 to 6.2 quarts of 5W-30 synthetic oil meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C946-B1 / WSS-M2C946-A
  • Motorcraft FL-500S or OE-spec oil filter
  • Ford Motorcraft Yellow Prediluted Antifreeze/Coolant (WSS-M97B57-A1) or Motorcraft Orange (WSS-M97B44-D2)
  • 6 new Motorcraft SP-580 (or SP-594) spark plugs, pre-gapped to 0.030" (or 0.028" if tuned)
  • Upper and lower intake manifold gaskets
  • Exhaust manifold gaskets
  • Turbocharger mounting gaskets, oil feed/drain gaskets, and coolant line O-rings
  • Front crankshaft seal
  • Rear main seal
  • Torque-to-Yield (TTY) bolts (crankshaft harmonic balancer bolt, camshaft phaser bolts, cylinder head bolts)
  • Fresh front differential gear oil (75W-85 or 75W-90) for 4WD models

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Relearn, Fuel Injector Flow Code Programming, and PATS Parameter Reset

sources differ: Arm 1 highlights CKP Relearn and Injector Flow Code programming, while Arm 2 highlights the PATS Parameter Reset. Both require a dealer-level Ford IDS/FDRS or high-end bidirectional scan tool (like FORScan) to complete.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • The Oil Pan Pickup Tube Trap: If upgrading from the plastic pan to the aluminum pan, you must replace the oil pump pickup tube with part number LK4Z-6622-B to prevent oil starvation.
  • Do the Cam Phasers Now: Replace the cam phasers on an engine stand before installation to save 10+ hours of labor later.
  • Fragile Turbo Coolant Fittings: The quick-connect Jiffy-Tite coolant fittings on the back of the cylinder heads are extremely fragile and must be replaced with new OEM fittings before dropping the engine in.
  • Torque-to-Yield (TTY) Fasteners: The crankshaft balancer bolt, camshaft phaser bolts, and head bolts are single-use stretch bolts and must be replaced.
  • Dual Fuel System: High-pressure direct injection lines require special care and precise torque to avoid leaks.
  • Oil Pan Design Change: Some service replacement blocks use a one-piece oil pan design that may require modification of transmission cooler lines and engine harness.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Reusing Contaminated or Worn Turbochargers: Debris from a previous engine failure can destroy the new engine via the transferred turbos.
  • Skipping the Crankshaft Position (CKP) Relearn: Results in a flashing check engine light and random misfire codes (P0300).
  • Forgetting the Oil Pickup Tube on Pan Conversions: Leads to instant bearing failure on first start.
  • Using the Wrong Coolant: Mixing generic green or older orange coolant with Motorcraft Yellow causes chemical gelling and overheating.
  • Ignoring the 'Less Turbos' Note: Assuming the engine assembly includes the turbochargers.
  • Reusing Torque-to-Yield (TTY) Bolts: Causes improper clamping force and post-install head gasket failures.
  • Skipping the PATS Parameter Reset: The truck's security system will prevent the engine from starting.
  • Buying the Wrong Engine Version: Attempting to install this F-150 engine into transverse-mounted platforms like the Explorer or Taurus SHO.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every engine of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeCam Phaser Rattle on Cold Start2017-2020

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace the four Variable Cam Timing (VCT) units with updated Ford phaser part numbers (HL3Z-6256-CD for intake, HL3Z-6C525-CD for exhaust). Ford issued Customer Satisfaction Program 21B10/21N03 and TSBs 22-2200, 21-2119, and 23-2143.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 300-10007-5445881). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
