Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Confirm the vehicle is a 4x4 (4WD) model.
  • Confirm the engine is a 2.7L EcoBoost V6 or 3.5L EcoBoost V6 (not compatible with 5.0L V8, 3.0L Diesel, or Hybrid).
  • Verify the current transmission ID tag matches ML3P-7000-FA or NL1P-7000-DA.
🔎 Where to look: The main transmission identification tag is located on the passenger side (Arm 1) or driver's side (Arm 2) of the transmission case. The solenoid strategy tag is on the driver's side.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

7-12shop labor1200-2200typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced to ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • High-lift transmission jack with safety straps
  • Ford 307-569 Transmission Line Disconnect Tool
  • Ford-compatible scan tool (Ford IDS/FDRS or FORScan with OBDLink EX adapter)
  • Torque wrench (inch-pounds and foot-pounds)
🔌 Wiring harness: External wiring and sensors are not included. The vehicle's PCM must be programmed with the replacement unit's specific solenoid strategy and ID.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Ford Mercon ULV (Ultra Low Viscosity) fluid (Specification WSS-M2C949-A / XT-12-QULV)
  • New transmission filter and pan gasket
  • Front pump/torque-converter seal (Ford Part HL3Z-7A248-A)
  • Hook seal (JL3Z-7570-A) / tail housing seal
  • Heated back-flush of transmission cooler and lines (or complete cooler replacement)

What’s involved: Solenoid Body Strategy Programming & Transmission Adaptive Relearn

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) must be programmed with the replacement unit's unique 13-digit Solenoid Strategy and 12-digit Solenoid ID (found on the transmission case tag). This can be done using Ford OEM scan tools (IDS/FDRS) or FORScan with an extended license. An Adaptive Learning Drive Cycle must be performed after programming.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated (~20mm / 0.78 inches from bellhousing face) before bolting to the engine to avoid cracking the front pump gear.
  • Write Down Strategy Tag: Take a photo of the 13-digit Solenoid Strategy and 12-digit Solenoid ID on the driver's side of the case before installation, as it is blocked by the cab tunnel once installed.
  • Fluid Level Check Temperature: Check fluid level only when idling in Park with transmission fluid temperature strictly between 206°F and 215°F (96°C to 101°C). Checking cold leads to severe under-filling.
  • Dowel Pin Alignment: Ensure engine block alignment dowel pins are present and not stuck in the old transmission to prevent crooked seating and pump failure.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Skipping Solenoid Strategy Programming: Attempting to run the transmission without programming the new strategy, resulting in immediate harsh shifts, slipping, and rapid clutch destruction.
  • Using the Wrong ATF: Using Mercon LV or other universal fluids instead of the required ultra-low viscosity Mercon ULV.
  • Improper Fluid Level Check: Checking the fluid level cold instead of at the hot operating temperature (206°F-215°F), leading to running the unit low on fluid.
  • Reusing a Contaminated Cooler: Failing to perform a heated flush or replacement of the cooler, allowing debris from the failed transmission to destroy the new unit.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeHarsh/Delayed Shifts (CDF clutch cylinder sleeve slippage blocking hydraulic fluid passages)2021-2022 F-150 and other early 10R80 models

🔎 Recommended at install: Teardown to install Ford's updated CDF drum design or replace the CDF clutch cylinder.

moderateDifficulty Shifting Out of Gear / Erratic Shifting2021-2024 F-150

🔎 Recommended at install: Refer to TSB instructions for diagnostic and shifting resolution.

severeTransmission Rollaway Risk (loose bolt inside transmission preventing Park engagement)Certain 2022-2023 F-150 and Expedition

🔎 Recommended at install: Have a Ford dealer run the VIN to verify if recall was performed, or inspect the internal park mechanism before installation.

moderateHigh-pitched whine or whistle from transmission at low speeds (output shaft bearing issue)Early 2020 models (built from late 2019)

🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect output shaft bearing on high-mileage units.

minorGeneral Shift Quality Complaints (clunky or jerky low-speed shifts)All years

🔎 Recommended at install: Often normal behavior of adaptive learning software; perform adaptive learning drive cycle.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-11486-5515012). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
