Know This Transmission Before You Buy
The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:
A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:
- Confirm the 8th digit of the VIN is 'D' (3.5L PowerBoost Full Hybrid engine).
- Verify the vehicle is 4x2 (RWD) by checking for the absence of a front differential, front CV axles, or transfer case.
- Locate the identification tag on the left side of the transmission case to match the engineering ID or part number.
What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:
Special tools this job needs:
- High-voltage safety gear (insulated gloves rated for 1,000V, CAT III multimeter)
- Ford FDRS/IDS scan tool with J2534 pass-thru
- Heavy-duty transmission jack
- Torque converter holding/alignment tool
- Engine support bar
- Cooler line disconnect tool (Ford 307-569)
Budget for these consumables at install:
- Motorcraft MERCON ULV (Ultra-Low Viscosity) Automatic Transmission Fluid (Specification WSS-M2C949-A / Part XT-12-QULV)
- Motorcraft FT-217 or FT-202 Transmission Filter
- Pan Gasket (L1MZ-7F396-A)
- Fluid Pan To Case Seals (L1MZ-7N265-A)
- Hybrid Drive Unit Feed Tube Seals (BL8Z-7G199-A)
- Auxiliary Pump Seal (L1MZ-7J135-A)
- Torque converter seal and driveshaft seals
- Heated transmission cooler flush solvent
What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:
What’s involved: Solenoid Strategy Programming and Transmission Adaptive Relearn
Must program the unique 12-digit Solenoid Body ID and 13-digit Strategy code into the vehicle's PCM using Ford FDRS/IDS. Failure to do so causes extremely harsh shifting and immediate transmission damage.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- De-energize the High-Voltage System before touching orange cables by removing the High-Voltage Service Disconnect plug and verifying 0V.
- Ensure the torque converter is fully seated (three distinct clicks, measuring ~1.0 to 1.125 inches from bellhousing face to converter pads) to avoid cracking the front pump gear.
- Write down or photograph the 13-digit solenoid strategy and 12-digit solenoid body ID from the tag on the left side of the case before installation.
- Check fluid level strictly at operating temperature (195°F to 215°F / 90°C to 101°C) with the engine running in Park using the case-mounted dipstick plug.
- Ensure alignment dowels are present and clean on the engine block.
Easy to get right once you know them:
- Ordering for a non-hybrid or 4x4 truck instead of a 4x2 (RWD) Hybrid.
- Skipping the Solenoid Strategy Programming and expecting the vehicle to learn it automatically.
- Reusing old transmission fluid or filling with standard Mercon V or Mercon LV instead of Mercon ULV.
- Failing to professionally flush the transmission cooler lines, which recirculates debris and voids the warranty.
- Attempting to disconnect high-voltage cables without de-energizing the hybrid battery first.
Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:
🔎 Recommended at install: Internal CDF clutch cylinder sleeve slips out of place; requires replacement of the cylinder or transmission rebuild.
🔎 Recommended at install: Faulty valve body separator plate restricts fluid flow; requires PCM software update and inspection of transmission components.
🔎 Recommended at install: Corrected via a PCM software update.
🔎 Recommended at install: Software issues and faulty auxiliary battery isolator; requires software update and isolator replacement.
🔎 Recommended at install: Addresses potential whining noise at idle or while driving.
Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-11269-5493430). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.
Policies, in plain English.
Shipping & Handling
- Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
- Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
- The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
- Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance
120-Day Warranty
This part includes a 120-day warranty.
- If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
- Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
- Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation
Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.
Returns (30 Days)
We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.
- Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
- Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
- Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
- Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
- Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited
Damaged in Shipping?
Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:
- Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
- Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
- Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
- Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery
We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.
Order Cancellation
Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
