What’s involved: Crankshaft Position (CKP) Variation Relearn & Fuel Injector Flow Rate Programming

Crankshaft Position (CKP) Variation Relearn is absolutely required whenever the engine assembly, crankshaft, or crankshaft position sensor is replaced. Fuel Injector Flow Rate Programming is required if using the replacement engine's injectors; the unique 30-character calibration codes stamped on each injector must be programmed into the ECM. Security/Immobilizer Re-marriage is only required if swapping the ECM itself.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • High-Pressure Fuel Lines (One-Time Use): The high-pressure fuel lines connecting the high-pressure fuel pump to the fuel rails are torque-to-yield and designed for single-use only. Reusing them is a major safety hazard as they are prone to leaking under extreme pressures (up to 2,900+ PSI).
  • Vacuum Pump Screen Clogging: The engine-mounted mechanical vacuum pump is lubricated by engine oil. There is a tiny filter screen in the oil feed line/fitting to the vacuum pump. If this screen is clogged, the vacuum pump will starve of oil and fail catastrophically, which can take out the engine's timing drive.
  • Oil Pan and Pickup Tube Alignment: If you have to swap the oil pan (e.g., 2WD vs 4WD/AWD), you must align the oil pan perfectly flush with the rear of the engine block to prevent transmission bellhousing misalignment. Ensure the oil pickup tube O-ring is seated perfectly; a pinched O-ring will cause oil aeration, low oil pressure, and immediate lifter/bearing failure.
  • Direct Injector Flow Codes: You must write down the 30-character flow calibration codes stamped on each injector on the replacement engine and program them into the corresponding cylinder locations in your ECM.
  • Active Fuel Management (AFM) VLOM: The Valve Lifter Oil Manifold (VLOM) sits under the intake manifold and controls oil flow to the AFM lifters. If the donor engine had any metal debris in the oil, the solenoids in the VLOM can trap this debris, leading to immediate lifter failure. Replace or thoroughly clean it before installing.

  • Reusing High-Pressure Fuel Lines: Reusing these lines almost always results in a fuel leak under the intake manifold, creating a severe fire hazard.
  • Pinched Oil Pickup Tube O-Ring: Installers often pinch or misalign the oil pickup tube O-ring when swapping the oil pan, leading to low or zero oil pressure upon first start.
  • Not Performing the Crankshaft Relearn: Skipping this mandatory procedure causes the engine to run rough or trigger a constant flashing Check Engine Light with a P0300 code.
  • Assuming All 6.2L Engines are the Same: Ordering an L86 engine for a vehicle that actually requires an L87 (2019+ trucks or 2021+ SUVs) or an LT1 (Corvette/Camaro).
