Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Confirm the 'TR' code on the driver's side door jamb sticker is 'U'.
  • Verify the vehicle has a column shifter, not a rotary dial shifter.
  • Verify the transmission tailhousing has two rear mounts bolted to the crossmember.
  • Confirm the engine is the 3.0L EcoBoost V6.
  • Locate the original part number tag on the right side of the transmission to match L1MZ-7000-K or L1MP-7000-YA.
🔎 Where to look: Look for the white barcode sticker on the left (driver's) side of the transmission case for the 12-digit solenoid body ID and 13-digit strategy.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

7 to 10 hoursshop labor$1,050 to $1,800typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced / ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • High-lift transmission jack with safety straps
  • Ford 307-569 Transmission Line Disconnect Tool
  • Torque wrenches (inch-pound and foot-pound)
  • Ford-compatible diagnostic scan tool (FDRS/IDS)
🔌 Wiring harness: Requires transferring or verifying external wiring harness and programming the unique 12-digit Solenoid Body ID and 13-digit Solenoid Body Strategy into the vehicle's PCM/TCM.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Ford Motorcraft MERCON ULV Automatic Transmission Fluid (Part XT-12-QULV / XT-12-QLV)
  • Transmission fluid filter (Part L1MZ-7A098-A)
  • Pan gasket (Part HL3Z-7A191-B)
  • Front pump/torque converter oil seal (Part HL3Z-7A248-D / HL3P-7A248-AA)
  • Professional heated back-flush of transmission cooler and lines

What’s involved: Solenoid Strategy Programming & Adaptive Relearn

Must program the replacement unit's unique 12-digit Solenoid Body ID and 13-digit Solenoid Body Strategy into the PCM/TCM using Ford FDRS/IDS, followed by the Transmission Adaptive Learning Drive Cycle.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Take a photo of the Solenoid Strategy tag on the left side of the case before installation as it is unreadable once installed.
  • Ensure the torque converter is fully seated (three distinct clicks/drops) to avoid crushing the internal oil pump upon engine mating.
  • Strict fluid level check procedure: check while idling in Park with fluid temperature strictly between 206°F and 215°F (96°C to 101°C) using the side plug mini-dipstick.
  • Use the correct Ford 307-569 disconnect tool to avoid damaging transmission cooler lines.
  • The top passenger-side bellhousing bolt is notoriously difficult to access and may require removing exhaust brackets.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Reusing the old torque converter or skipping the mandatory cooler line flush, which recirculates debris and destroys the new valve body.
  • Assuming the transmission is plug-and-play without programming the Solenoid Strategy, leading to harsh shifts, error code P163E, and immediate clutch damage.
  • Ordering this unit for a civilian Explorer ST or Platinum (which use the incompatible 10R60 transmission with a rotary dial shifter).
  • Checking the fluid level cold, leading to severe overfilling, fluid foaming, and fluid blowing out of the vent tube.
  • Using incorrect fluid like Mercon LV instead of the strictly required Mercon ULV.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-10774-4852014). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
