Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Verify your VIN's 8th digit is '2' (designates the 2.0L GDI 4-cylinder engine).
  • Check the Safety Certification Label on the driver's side door B-pillar/jamb and confirm the 'TR' (Transmission) code is '8'.
  • Confirm your Transit Connect is Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) and does not use an AWD Power Transfer Unit (PTU).
  • Verify your shift linkage type is a mechanical shift cable (park-by-cable) attached to the top of the case.
  • Confirm your engine is the 2.0L, as this does not fit the 2.5L engine.
🔎 Where to look: Look for the white sticker on the transmission case with barcodes and a 13-digit 'SOL STRATEGY' number, or check the 'TR' code on the driver's door jamb sticker for code '8'.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

8-12 hoursshop labor$1,200 - $2,000typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced / ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Engine support bar
  • Heavy-duty transmission jack
  • Ford-compatible diagnostic scan tool (FDRS, IDS, or FORScan with high-quality OBD2 adapter)
  • Torque converter holding bracket
  • Torque wrench
  • Socket and wrench sets
🔌 Wiring harness: External sensors and wiring harness must be transferred from the old unit. Software calibration is specific to Transit Connect models.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Motorcraft MERCON ULV (Ultra Low Viscosity) Automatic Transmission Fluid (Ford Spec WSS-M2C949-A)
  • Torque converter hub seal (input shaft seal)
  • Axle shaft seals (both sides)
  • Transmission cooler line flush solvent / agent
  • External in-line filter (recommended for cooler return line to protect replacement unit)

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

What’s involved: Solenoid Strategy Programming & TCM Adaptive Relearn

The 13-digit solenoid strategy code and 12-digit solenoid ID printed on the transmission case tag must be programmed into the vehicle's PCM using a Ford-specific scan tool (FDRS/IDS) or FORScan. Skipping this step causes immediate harsh shifting, slipping, and clutch destruction. An adaptive shift relearn procedure and specific drive cycle must also be performed.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Photograph the Solenoid Tag First: Take a clear photo of the 13-digit solenoid strategy and 12-digit solenoid ID on the left side of the case before installation, as it is blocked and unreadable once installed.
  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated (rotating and pushing until it drops/clicks 2-3 times). If not fully seated, bolting the transmission to the engine will crush the internal oil pump, destroying the unit instantly.
  • Thermal Bypass Valve & Cooler Clogging: The external cooling system uses a thermostatic bypass valve. You must thoroughly flush or replace the bypass valve and cooler to prevent trapped metal shavings and clutch debris from washing into the replacement transmission.
  • Strict Fluid Level Check Procedure: The 8F35 has no dipstick. Fill through the top vent/fill port (requires removing airbox), cycle gears at idle, monitor Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) via scan tool until it reaches 185°F–200°F (85°C to 93°C), and check level via the side leveling plug while the engine is running and vehicle is level.
  • Adaptive Learning / Relearn Procedure: The vehicle will not shift correctly immediately after installation. The PCM's adaptive memory must be cleared and driven through a specific sequence of light accelerations and stops.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Skipping the Solenoid Strategy Programming: Assuming the unit is plug-and-play, which leads to immediate harsh shifting and rapid clutch destruction.
  • Using the Wrong Fluid: Purchasing standard MERCON LV or generic multi-vehicle ATF instead of the required MERCON ULV.
  • Checking Fluid Level Cold or Engine Off: Checking fluid level with the engine off or before reaching hot operating temperature, leading to severe under-filling.
  • Forcing the Bellhousing Bolts: Using bolts to pull the transmission and engine together when the torque converter is not fully seated, cracking the oil pump gear pocket.
  • Skipping the Cooler Flush: Reintroducing metal shavings and debris from the previous failed unit into the replacement transmission.
  • Not Replacing Seals: Failing to replace the inexpensive torque converter and axle seals during the swap, leading to leaks shortly after.
  • Misdiagnosing the Problem: Ordering a replacement transmission before a qualified specialist has confirmed the transmission itself is the point of failure.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-10724-5509709). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
