What’s involved: VIN-specific programming (flashing) of the TEHCM (TCM) and a Service Fast Learn (adaptive relearn).
The internal TEHCM is locked to the donor vehicle's VIN. It must be reprogrammed using GM Service Programming System (SPS) with a dealer-level tool, cloned, or swapped with the original working TEHCM. A Service Fast Learn Adapts procedure must also be performed.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- Torque Converter Seating: Must click/engage three times and spin freely by hand after bellhousing is bolted. Forcing it tight will crack the front pump and destroy the transmission.
- Subframe Cradle Support: Dropping the front subframe requires an engine support bar from above to hold the engine in place.
- Transfer Case (PTU) Alignment: Carefully align and bolt the PTU, clean and lubricate splines, and replace the intermediate shaft seal.
- Fluid Level Check Procedure: No dipstick. Must check via the level control plug on the side of the case with the engine running, transmission at operating temperature, and vehicle perfectly level.
- Dowel Pins: Ensure alignment dowel pins are present and clean on the engine block to prevent seal leaks and pump damage.
Easy to get right once you know them:
- Ordering FWD (RPO MH2) instead of AWD (RPO MH4).
- Not programming the TEHCM to the vehicle's VIN, resulting in a no-crank/no-start or limp mode.
- Forgetting the Service Fast Learn adaptive relearn procedure, causing immediate harsh shifting and clutch damage.
- Overfilling the fluid due to checking without using the proper level plug procedure.
- Reusing a contaminated cooler/radiator, which flushes debris from the old failed unit into the replacement transmission.
- Misdiagnosing a bad sensor, wiring, or TEHCM pressure switch seal as a complete transmission failure.
