Know This Engine Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:

  • Verify the 8th digit of the VIN is 'D'.
  • Confirm the truck is equipped with the 10-speed modular hybrid automatic transmission (10R80-MHT).
  • Confirm the presence of 'PowerBoost' badges and the high-voltage battery pack under the truck.
  • Check the white barcode label on the original engine's front timing cover or driver-side valve cover for engineering codes ML3E-6007-DA or NL3E-6007-PA.
🔎 Where to look: The 8th digit of the VIN must be 'D' and the engine engineering code must be ML3E-6007-DA or NL3E-6007-PA.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

18 to 28 hoursshop labor$2,750 to $5,000typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • High-Voltage Insulated Gloves (Class 0 rated for at least 1,000V AC)
  • Ford FDRS / IDS Diagnostic Scan Tool
  • Vacuum Coolant Refiller
  • Engine Lift Plate (e.g., Milton STC50133)
  • Fuel Injector Puller (e.g., ProMAXX PowerPull)
  • 76mm oil filter cap wrench
🔌 Wiring harness: You must use the hybrid-specific engine wiring harness. Standard gas-only harnesses are not compatible.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • 6.0 quarts of SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic Motor Oil meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C961-A1
  • Motorcraft FL-500S Oil Filter
  • Motorcraft Yellow Prediluted Antifreeze/Coolant meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B57-A2 (VC-13-G)
  • Six Motorcraft SP-589 iridium spark plugs (pre-gapped to 0.030")
  • Intake manifold gaskets
  • Exhaust manifold gaskets
  • Turbocharger Gasket Kit (mounting gaskets, oil feed/drain gaskets, and coolant line O-rings)

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Programmable Module Installation (PMI), Parameter Reset, Crankshaft Position (CKP) Relearn, and Transmission Adaptive Strategy Reset

Requires Ford FDRS/IDS scan tool or high-end professional equivalent with J2534 pass-thru capabilities and a subscription to the Ford service portal to perform module alignment, parameter reset, and marry the replacement unit to the vehicle's other modules.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • High-Voltage Service Disconnect (CRITICAL): Locate and remove the high-voltage service disconnect plug under the rear seat. Wait at least 10 minutes to allow capacitors to discharge and verify zero voltage before touching orange cables.
  • Dual Cooling Loops: The PowerBoost has separate cooling systems for the engine and the low-temperature hybrid electronics. Both loops must be vacuum-filled to prevent air pockets and component damage.
  • Cab-Off vs. Cab-On Swap: Lifting the cab off the frame is highly recommended due to tight clearances and complex hybrid wiring.
  • Turbo Line O-Rings: Do not reuse quick-connect coolant and oil line O-rings when transferring existing turbochargers.
  • Oil Filter Location: The oil filter is difficult to access once installed; replace it before putting the engine in the truck.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Ordering for a Non-Hybrid Truck: Assuming standard 3.5L EcoBoost engines are identical to the PowerBoost hybrid engine.
  • Reusing Turbo Hardware and Seals: Reusing old turbocharger mounting studs, gaskets, and line seals which leads to leaks.
  • Skipping the Vacuum Coolant Fill: Attempting to bleed the cooling system using traditional spill-free funnels, causing inverter overheating.
  • Neglecting the High-Voltage Disconnect: Attempting to disconnect engine components with the hybrid battery active, risking electrical damage or injury.
  • Ignoring TSBs: Failing to check and address known issues like the heat exchanger coolant leak during the swap.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every engine of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 300-10616-5365448). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
