What’s involved: Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Relearn / PCM VIN Matching

Sources differ on programming requirements. While the engine will physically start and run, a Crankshaft Position Sensor relearn must be performed using a bi-directional scan tool to prevent misfire codes (P0300). Additionally, if you do not reuse your original PCM, the replacement PCM must be reprogrammed to match your vehicle's VIN and immobilizer system.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

• The AWD Intermediate Shaft Trap: The front passenger-side CV axle intermediate shaft passes directly through the upper aluminum oil pan. You must remove the front axles and slide this shaft completely out of the oil pan before hoisting the engine, or you will crack the pan and damage the differential.
• Fragile Oil Filter Housing: The plastic oil filter housing in the engine valley is extremely fragile. The torque spec for the oil filter cap is strictly 18 lb-ft (25 Nm) and the mounting bolts require 106 in-lbs. Overtightening will crack the housing.
• Knock Sensor Harness Inspection: Inspect and replace the knock sensor harness located in the engine valley if it shows signs of oil or coolant contamination from a leaking oil cooler.
• Abrasive Cleaning Warning: Never use abrasive pads (like Scotch-Brite or Roloc discs) on the aluminum block or head mating surfaces. Use only plastic scrapers and approved chemical gasket removers.
• Engine Lifting: Do not use simple chains to lift the engine. Use the correct bolt-on lifting brackets to avoid damaging the aluminum components.

Easy to get right once you know them:

• Ordering for a Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) Vehicle: The AWD engine block and oil pan are physically different and cannot be easily converted or interchanged with RWD models.
• Not Swapping Your Original Harness and Sensors: Assuming the donor engine's harness and sensors will plug and play. Sensor calibrations and pinouts vary by model year and emissions package.
• Failing to Perform the Crankshaft Relearn: Assuming the engine is defective when a flashing check engine light and P0300 code appear due to a missing CKP relearn.
• Over-tightening the Oil Filter Cap or Housing: Cracking the plastic oil cooler housing by not using a torque wrench.
• Reusing Torque-to-Yield (TTY) Bolts: Reusing old head bolts, which leads to head gasket failure.
