The engine will start and run without it, but it will likely trigger a flashing Check Engine Light, store DTC P0315, and disable automatic start-stop and cruise control.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

• Subframe Drop Method: Do not attempt to pull this engine out of the top of the vehicle. Drop the entire subframe/cradle from the bottom.
• AWD Transfer Case (PTU) Clearance: If AWD, you must completely remove the Power Take-Off Unit (PTU) before separating the engine from the transmission to avoid cracking the bellhousing.
• Torque-to-Yield Bolts: Flywheel, harmonic balancer, and cylinder head bolts are stretch fasteners and cannot be reused.
• High-Pressure Fuel Line Leakage: The direct-injection system operates at over 2,000 PSI. Reusing the high-pressure fuel line creates an immediate fire hazard.
