Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Confirm the 8th digit of the VIN is 'S' or 'T' (3.2L V6 engine).
  • Check the Selec-Terrain dial on the center console: confirm it does NOT have a '4-WD LOW' button (Active Drive I).
  • Confirm the axle ratio is 3.51 (check build sheet or rear differential label).
🔎 Where to look: Locate the barcode sticker on the top of the transmission case under the shifter cable bracket and PCM mount. Confirm the part number is 68311476BA or 68311476AA.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

7.0 to 9.5 hoursshop labor1100 to 1800typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Engine support fixture
  • Transmission jack
  • Mopar Dipstick Tool P/N 10323A
  • wiTECH Diagnostic Scan Tool (or high-end bi-directional equivalent)
  • E-12 inverted Torx socket
  • Long extensions and wobble socket
🔌 Wiring harness: Internal harness is integrated, but external wiring harness pinouts differ significantly between vehicle models using the same base ZF 9HP48 design.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Mopar 8 & 9 Speed ATF (P/N 68218925AB) or ZF Lifeguard Fluid 9
  • Torque Converter Hub Seal
  • Axle shaft seals
  • High-pressure transmission cooler-line flush solvent
  • High-pressure OEM-specified spline grease (for PTU splines)

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

What’s involved: TCM Adaptive Relearn (Quick Learn) and Valve Body Solenoid Learn

A factory wiTECH scan tool or equivalent high-level professional scanner is required to clear and reset adaptive memory cells. A specific 'Quick Learn' must be run, followed by a precise 'Adaptation Drive Learn' road test. Skipping this will cause extremely harsh shifts, slipping, or immediate limp mode.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the converter is fully seated on the splines. Never use bellhousing bolts to draw the transmission flush to the engine, or you will crack the internal oil pump gear.
  • Fluid Level Check Complexity: There is no dipstick. The vehicle must be level on a lift, running in Park, with fluid temperature strictly between 122°F and 140°F. Use Mopar Tool 10323A to measure and compare to a temperature chart.
  • PTU Spline Greasing: Clean rust and apply high-pressure spline grease to the intermediate shaft splines when mating the PTU.
  • E-12 Inverted Torx Bolts: The top two bellhousing bolts are extremely difficult to access and require an E-12 socket with long extensions and a wobble joint.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Using the wrong transmission fluid (such as standard ATF+4 or generic multi-vehicle ATF) instead of Mopar 8 & 9 Speed ATF / ZF Lifeguard 9.
  • Skipping the scan-tool 'Quick Learn' and 'Adaptation Drive Learn' procedures, leading to harsh shifting and false assumptions of a defective unit.
  • Cracking the internal oil pump gear during installation by failing to fully seat the torque converter before bolting the transmission to the engine.
  • Confusing AWD drivetrain systems (ordering this Active Drive I single-speed unit for an Active Drive II two-speed vehicle).

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeUnexpected Shift to Neutral (NHTSA Recall 16V-529 / Chrysler S55)2014–2015 (and some early 2016/2017)

🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect wire harness; insufficient terminal crimping causes resistance spikes triggering neutral shifts.

severeLoss of PTU Spline Engagement (NHTSA Recall W47 / FCA #01C)2014-2017

🔎 Recommended at install: Software update that engages rear wheels and electronic parking brake if spline failure is detected.

moderateShift Quality and Ratio Faults (TSB 21-008-21 / 21-013-16)2014-2019

🔎 Recommended at install: Flash TCM with latest software calibration and perform complete adaptive relearn.

moderateCase Split Line Oil Leak (TSB 21-041-20)2019

🔎 Recommended at install: Tighten lower transmission case bolts to updated torque specifications.

moderateTorque Converter Clutch Performance / DTC P1DB7-00 (TSB 21-040-25)2014-2020

🔎 Recommended at install: Install reaction shaft service bushing kit (P/N 68732959AB).

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-10069-4846834). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
