This is a used part. This 2.0L 4-cylinder engine was removed from a vehicle with an automatic transmission. It features a double overhead cam (DOHC) design with 16 valves and continuous variable valve timing (CVVT). The engine has an aluminum block and head with a 10.0:1 compression ratio. This assembly does not include the turbocharger. The supplier notes it runs well. There are two different throttle valve designs for certain models; please compare yours to ensure it matches.

This is a 2.0L turbocharged engine. Fitment is specific to the 2.0L Turbo models of the vehicles listed. Please verify your vehicle's 8th VIN digit to ensure compatibility: Kia Optima (VIN 2), Hyundai Sonata (VIN B), Hyundai Santa Fe (VIN A), and Kia Sorento (VIN 1).

Know This Engine Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:

  • Verify the 8th digit of the VIN matches the correct code for your vehicle (A for Santa Fe, B for Sonata, 2 for Optima, 1 for Sorento).
  • Verify the engine code stamped on the front of the block near the transmission bellhousing reads G4KH.
  • Confirm whether your vehicle is Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) or All-Wheel Drive (AWD).
  • Confirm your original engine is a 2.0L Turbo, as this will not fit naturally aspirated 2.0L or 2.4L models.
🔎 Where to look: The 8th digit of the VIN plate visible through the driver's side windshield, and the engine code G4KH stamped on the front of the engine block near the transmission bellhousing mating surface.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

10 to 16 hoursshop labor$1,500 to $3,000typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Engine hoist and load leveler
  • High-quality torque wrench
  • High-pressure fuel line disconnect tool
  • Fuel injector puller/installer tool
  • Professional-grade scan tool
🔌 Wiring harness: The main engine harness should be transferred from the original engine to ensure compatibility with the vehicle's body harness and systems.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Fresh OE-spec 5W-30 or 5W-20 Full Synthetic oil
  • Genuine OEM Kia/Hyundai oil filter
  • Fresh phosphate-free organic acid technology (OAT) or ethylene glycol-based coolant
  • New intake manifold gasket
  • New exhaust manifold / turbocharger gasket set
  • New thermostat and thermostat gasket
  • New front and rear crankshaft main seals
  • New OE-spec iridium spark plugs
  • New OEM turbocharger oil feed line
  • New one-time-use high-pressure fuel pipe

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Relearn, ECU adaptive value/fuel trim reset, and KSDS software update.

A dealer-level scan tool (Kia KDS / Hyundai GDS) or advanced aftermarket equivalent is required to perform the CKP relearn, reset adaptive values, and ensure the critical Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) software update is installed to protect against bearing failure.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • AWD vs. FWD Oil Pan & Bracket Swap: If swapping between AWD and FWD vehicles, you must transfer the upper and lower oil pans, intermediate shaft bracket, and transfer case mounting brackets from the original engine.
  • Turbocharger Priming: You must prime the turbocharger with fresh oil before starting the engine for the first time by cranking the engine in short intervals with ignition/fuel disabled.
  • High-Pressure Fuel System Safety: The metal high-pressure fuel pipe connecting the pump to the rail is a one-time-use part. Reusing it can cause microscopic fuel leaks and severe engine fire hazards.
  • Torque-to-Yield (TTY) Bolts: Cylinder head bolts, connecting rod bolts, and crankshaft balancer bolts are TTY and must be replaced with new OEM fasteners.
  • KSDS Software Update: Ensure the vehicle's ECU has the latest Knock Sensor Detection System software update installed by a dealer after installation.
  • Intake Manifold Cleaning: Thoroughly clean the intake manifold and intercooler system of any oil or metal debris from the previous engine failure to prevent ingestion.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Reusing the metal high-pressure fuel pipe, which leads to high-pressure fuel leaks and engine bay fires.
  • Using cheap aftermarket oil filters, which cause low oil pressure warnings, knocking, and eventual bearing failure.
  • Reusing the old turbo oil feed line, which can trap metal shavings and sludge from the previous engine failure and destroy the turbo.
  • Failing to verify drivetrain layout (FWD vs AWD) and discovering mid-installation that the transfer case does not align with the engine block.
  • Ignoring the KSDS software update, leaving the replacement engine vulnerable to the well-documented rod bearing failures.
  • Not checking the oil level frequently, assuming it will remain fine between standard oil changes despite known oil consumption tendencies.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every engine of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

🔎 Recommended at install: Engine inspection, bearing clearance test, and installation of the Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) software update (Kia Campaign SC200 / TSB SC2001). Replacement of engine if failure is detected.

severeEngine Compartment Fire Risk2015-2020

🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect and replace high-pressure fuel pipe if damaged or improperly installed during previous engine replacements.

severePiston Ring Wear & High Oil Consumption2015-2020

🔎 Recommended at install: Frequent oil level monitoring, carbon cleaning of piston rings to prevent sticking.

moderateHigh-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) Failure2015-2020

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace the mechanical HPFP mounted on top of the valve cover.

moderateCrankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Failure2015-2020

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace the CKP sensor to resolve intermittent stalling or limp home mode.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 300-81720-5506641). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
