This is a used part. This 5.3L 8-cylinder engine (option code L84) was tested and runs well. It is compatible with vehicles featuring the 5.3L engine and automatic transmission. Built for the US market; verify your vehicle's 8th VIN digit is D. You may need to change the induction and electrical systems as necessary. Please compare the injectors to your original part.

This engine fits vehicles with the 5.3L V8 engine, specifically the L84 option code, which corresponds to the 8th digit of the VIN being 'D'. To ensure proper fitment, please compare the fuel injectors on this engine to your original engine, as two different injector port sizes were used in production.

Know This Engine Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:

  • Verify the 8th digit of the VIN is 'D'.
  • Confirm the RPO code 'L84' is listed on the build specification sticker or QR code.
  • Confirm transmission type (8-speed vs 10-speed automatic) to determine if the flexplate, wiring harness brackets, or starter index plate must be swapped.
🔎 Where to look: The 8th digit of the VIN must be 'D' and the build sticker must list RPO code 'L84'.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

15 to 24 hoursshop labor$2,160 to $4,320typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced to ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • GM Engine Prelubricator (EN-45299 or equivalent)
  • GM Fuel Injector Remover/Installer Tool (EN-51146)
  • Crankshaft Balancer Puller/Installer (EN-51264)
  • Bi-directional Scan Tool (GM MDI, high-end Autel, Snap-on, or GM GDS2)
🔌 Wiring harness: Ensure the donor engine's wiring harness matches your vehicle's transmission configuration (8-speed vs. 10-speed automatic). If they differ, you must transfer your original engine harness to the replacement unit. Inspect the harness for chafing before installation.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Engine Oil: 8.0 quarts of SAE 0W-20 full synthetic oil meeting GM dexos1 Gen 3 (or Gen 2) specifications
  • Oil Filter: ACDelco PF63 or WIX WL10255
  • Coolant: GM-approved Dex-Cool (50/50 pre-diluted)
  • Spark Plugs: ACDelco Iridium spark plugs (pre-gapped)
  • Gaskets: Intake manifold gaskets, exhaust manifold gaskets, water pump gaskets, rear main seal, oil pan gasket, and valve cover gaskets
  • High-Pressure Fuel Feed Pipe (one-time-use crush seals)
  • Torque-to-Yield (TTY) Fasteners: Harmonic balancer bolt and exhaust manifold bolts
  • Thermostat and Gasket

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed✅ NoECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Crankshaft Position (CKP) Variation Relearn (CASE Relearn)

Whenever the engine is replaced, a Crankshaft Position System Variation Learning Procedure is mandatory. Failure to perform this will cause rough idling, inaccurate misfire detection, and trigger a flashing Check Engine Light with codes P0300, P0315, or P1336. Additionally, the vehicle's anti-theft system (Passkey) may need to be relearned.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Critical Engine Prelubing: The engine must be prelubed using a pressurized oil tank before installing accessory drive belts and starting to prevent dry startup bearing damage.
  • Inspect Rear Exhaust Manifold Bolts First: Extract any broken bolts from the cylinder heads while the engine is on the stand before installation.
  • Fragile DFM Connector: The main wiring connector for the DFM solenoids at the back of the engine block is easily crushed against the firewall during installation.
  • Oil Pan and Pickup Tube O-Ring: If transferring the oil pan or pickup tube, use a brand-new, perfectly seated and lubricated O-ring to prevent low oil pressure.
  • High-Pressure Fuel System: Follow specific procedures for de-pressurizing the system and ensuring leak-free connections.
  • Harness Chafing Inspection: Inspect the main engine harness for chafing near the control arm and shock tower areas before dropping the engine in.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Reusing the High-Pressure Fuel Lines: Reusing these one-time-use crush joint lines can cause engine bay fires.
  • Underfilling the Oil: The L84 requires exactly 8.0 quarts of oil, unlike older 5.3L engines that took 6.0 quarts. Underfilling causes immediate oil starvation to the DFM lifters.
  • Assuming a Bad Engine Due to False Misfire Codes: Skipping the Crankshaft Position Variation Relearn will cause a flashing Check Engine Light and P0300 code.
  • Reusing Stretched TTY Bolts: Reusing the harmonic balancer or exhaust manifold bolts can cause them to back out or snap.
  • Ignoring the DFM Lifter Issue: Buying a 100k+ mile engine without being aware of potential future lifter failures.
  • Not Swapping the ECM: Attempting to use the donor vehicle's ECM instead of reusing the original vehicle's ECM, which is programmed to the VIN and security system.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every engine of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 300-10291-5471044). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
