Know This Engine Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:

  • Verify the 8th digit of the VIN is H.
  • Confirm the vehicle has a 10-speed automatic transmission.
  • Inspect the existing turbocharger, wastegate actuator, and exhaust manifold for damage before transferring them.
🔎 Where to look: 8th digit of the VIN must be H

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

14 to 20 hoursshop labor$1,680 to $3,600typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Ford EcoBoost 2.0L/2.3L Timing Tool Kit (OEM 303-507, 303-1521, 303-1565)
  • Ford FDRS Diagnostic Scan Tool (or FORScan with OBDLink EX adapter)
  • Engine lifting equipment
  • Torque wrenches for critical fasteners
🔌 Wiring harness: You must reuse your vehicle's original engine wiring harness. Wiring harnesses are highly trim-specific and contain minor pinout variations.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • 6.0 to 6.2 quarts of SAE 5W-30 full synthetic oil (Ford WSS-M2C961-A1)
  • Motorcraft FL-910S oil filter
  • Motorcraft Yellow Prediluted Antifreeze/Coolant (WSS-M97B57-A1/A2 / VC-13DL-G)
  • Motorcraft SP-589 spark plugs (pre-gapped to 0.028–0.032 inches)
  • New single-use metal high-pressure fuel line (HPFP to fuel rail)
  • Intake manifold gaskets, exhaust manifold gaskets, turbocharger mounting gaskets, and oil/coolant turbo feed line seals
  • New diamond friction washer (Ford Part 1S7Z-6378-AA) if crankshaft pulley is removed
  • Torque-to-yield (TTY) fasteners (flywheel/flexplate bolts, crankshaft pulley bolt)

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Relearn, Transmission Control Module (TCM) Adaptive Reset, and PATS Security Relearn

Requires Ford FDRS/IDS or high-end professional scan tool with PATS programming capabilities to marry the replacement engine components to the vehicle's immobilizer system and perform CKP/TCM resets.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • The crankshaft pulley and timing sprocket are NOT keyed to the crankshaft. Do NOT loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt without installing the camshaft and crankshaft locking tools, or the engine will instantly jump timing and cause catastrophic valve-to-piston contact.
  • The paper-thin diamond friction washer behind the crankshaft pulley must be replaced if the pulley is removed. Reusing it can cause the timing to slip under load.
  • The high-pressure fuel line is a single-use crush-flare design. Reusing it creates a severe high-pressure fuel leak and fire hazard.
  • Vacuum lines routing to the wastegate solenoid and bypass valve are brittle and snap easily, causing boost control codes like P0299.
  • Pay close attention to the condition of the transferred turbocharger's oil feed and return lines. Debris or blockages will starve the turbo of oil and cause immediate failure.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Reusing the single-use high-pressure fuel line, leading to fuel leaks and engine bay fires.
  • Loosening the crankshaft bolt without timing locking tools, spinning the timing sprocket and ruining engine timing.
  • Reusing or omitting the paper-thin diamond friction washer behind the crank pulley.
  • Ordering this pre-MPC engine for a 2025+ model year Bronco or Ranger, which uses a completely different dual port/direct injection engine.
  • Assuming the swap is plug-and-play and ignoring the mandatory ECU/PATS programming requirements.
  • Ordering a 2.3L EcoBoost from a Mustang or Explorer assuming it is identical, ignoring critical mounting, oiling, and accessory drive differences.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 300-10582-5213328). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
