Know This Engine Before You Buy
The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:
A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:
- Confirm that the 8th digit of your vehicle's VIN is '8'.
- Confirm your Cadillac CTS is a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) or all-wheel-drive (AWD) longitudinal platform.
- Verify that your vehicle is a CTS V-Sport equipped with the 3.6L Twin-Turbo engine by checking for the visual presence of two turbochargers under the hood.
What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:
Special tools this job needs:
- EN-48383 Camshaft Retaining Tool Set
- EN-49982 (or ST-250) Timing Chain Retention Tool
- EN-46106 Flywheel/Crankshaft Locking Tool
- GM-47716-30A Cooling System Fill Adapter
- Fuel line disconnect tool set
- Torque wrench and angle gauge
Budget for these consumables at install:
- 7.0 quarts (6.6 liters) of full synthetic 5W-30 motor oil meeting GM dexos1 Gen 2 or Gen 3 specifications
- New high-quality spin-on oil filter (e.g., AC Delco PF63 or equivalent)
- DEX-COOL 50/50 pre-diluted coolant (approx. 14.5 quarts total capacity)
- 6 new iridium spark plugs (OEM spec: AC Delco 41-147 / GM 12662396), gapped strictly to 0.030" to 0.035"
- Intake manifold gasket set (upper and lower)
- Valve cover gaskets
- Exhaust manifold gaskets
- Turbocharger oil feed and drain line gaskets/O-rings
- Torque-to-yield (TTY) bolts (head bolts, main bearing bolts, and HPFP mounting bolts)
What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:
What’s involved: Immobilizer Relearn (VTD System), Crankshaft Position (CKP) Variation Relearn, and Idle Relearn Procedure
A GM dealer or a specialty shop with a dealership-level scan tool (such as GM GDS2) is required to perform the necessary module programming, anti-theft synchronization, and crankshaft position relearn.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- Intercooler Vacuum Filling: The LF3 uses an integrated charge-air cooler system. You must use a vacuum-fill tool to completely bleed the intercooler circuit to prevent high intake air temperatures.
- Turbo Oil Line O-Rings: You must replace the O-rings and gaskets on the turbo oil feed and return lines to prevent oil leaks and fire hazards.
- High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) Bolt Torque: The mounting bolts are torque-to-yield. Reusing or over-torquing them can strip the threads in the aluminum head.
- Fragile Vacuum Lines: The vacuum lines controlling the turbo wastegates are extremely brittle and easily cracked during installation.
- Tight Clearances: The engine bay is tight; removal of the entire front cooling package (radiator, condenser) is often required to clear the passenger side.
- Ground Straps: Ensure all engine-to-chassis ground straps are clean and securely reconnected.
Easy to get right once you know them:
- Ordering for an XTS V-Sport: The XTS is a front-wheel-drive/transverse platform, whereas the CTS is a rear-wheel-drive/longitudinal platform. This engine will not fit an XTS.
- Assuming Turbos are Included: This unit is sold without the turbochargers. You must transfer your existing turbos, wastegates, and charge pipes.
- Neglecting the Timing Chains: Installing a used 109k-mile GM 3.6L engine without replacing the timing chains and tensioners first is a major gamble.
- Reusing Spark Plugs: Reusing old spark plugs or failing to gap new ones correctly (.030".035") frequently leads to severe misfires under boost.
- Ignoring Turbo Health: Reusing old turbochargers without flushing or replacing contaminated oil cooler lines can destroy the turbos and the new engine.
Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every engine of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:
🔎 Recommended at install: Regular oil changes with high-quality synthetic oil; replace timing chain kit (chains, tensioners, and guides) before installation.
🔎 Recommended at install: Perform intake valve cleaning to remove baked-on carbon deposits.
🔎 Recommended at install: Monitor oil levels frequently; do not rely solely on the oil life monitor algorithm.
🔎 Recommended at install: Replace wastegate actuators if buzzing vibration or rattle occurs.
🔎 Recommended at install: Complete transmission fluid flush using Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP fluid.
🔎 Recommended at install: Complete replacement of the rear axle differential by a dealer.
🔎 Recommended at install: Fill the vehicle with fresh fuel and drive for 20 miles.
🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect and reroute vacuum hoses.
Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 300-06056-4926244). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.
Policies, in plain English.
Shipping & Handling
- Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
- Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
- The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
- Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance
120-Day Warranty
This part includes a 120-day warranty.
- If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
- Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
- Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation
Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.
Returns (30 Days)
We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.
- Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
- Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
- Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
- Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
- Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited
Damaged in Shipping?
Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:
- Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
- Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
- Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
- Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery
We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.
Order Cancellation
Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
