Know This Engine Before You Buy
The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:
A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:
- Verify the 8th digit of the VIN is 'G'.
- Confirm drivetrain configuration (2WD vs 4WD) to prepare for oil pan/bracket transfers.
- Check for Engine Start-Stop (ESS) system; this engine is strictly for non-ESS models.
- Inspect the oil filter cap style to ensure it matches the 2014+ design.
What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:
Special tools this job needs:
- Engine hoist and load leveler
- Fuel line disconnect tool
- High-quality inch-pound torque wrench
- Camshaft phaser lock/holding tools (Miller Tool 10200A, 10202, or 10369A)
- Torque angle gauge
Budget for these consumables at install:
- Engine Oil (6 quarts of 5W-20 or 0W-20 synthetic oil)
- OEM Mopar oil filter
- Mopar OAT (Organic Additive Technology) Coolant (MS.90032 / MS-12106)
- Upper and lower intake manifold gaskets (plenum gaskets)
- Thermostat housing gasket
- Exhaust manifold gaskets
- Oil filter housing/cooler seals
- Spark plugs (NGK Laser Iridium or Mopar OEM SP225755AB pre-gapped to 0.043")
- Front and rear main crankshaft seals
- PCV Valve
- Thermostat and Water Pump (highly advisable)
What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:
What’s involved: Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Relearn / Immobilizer Synchronization
Sources differ on exact programming scope. Arm 1 states only a Cam/Crank Variation Relearn is required (no ECU remarriage). Arm 2 states the immobilizer system (SKIM) must be synchronized and the PCM programmed with the truck's VIN. Cautious value 'yes' selected; a high-end bi-directional scan tool or dealer tool is required.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- The Valley Oil Cooler Trap: Inspect and replace the fragile plastic oil filter housing/cooler assembly with an upgraded all-aluminum aftermarket unit.
- Fragile Torque Specifications: Oil cooler bolts require a mere 106 in-lbs (12 Nm) of torque. Over-tightening will instantly crack the housing.
- Slow Oil Drain-Back: Wait at least 5 to 10 minutes before checking the dipstick during the first oil fill to avoid overfilling.
- Camshaft Cap Bolts: Torque precisely and in sequence to around 84 in-lbs. Caps are machined for specific locations and cannot be mixed up.
- Transferring Components: Must transfer exhaust manifolds, alternator, A/C compressor, power steering pump, and wiring harnesses from the old engine.
Easy to get right once you know them:
- Reusing a failing or warped plastic oil filter housing.
- Overtightening the plastic oil filter cap (only requires 18 ft-lbs / 25 Nm).
- Mixing incompatible coolants (mixing Mopar OAT with HOAT or green coolant gels the system).
- Reusing old rubber intake manifold gaskets, leading to vacuum leaks.
- Skipping the mandatory Cam/Crank sensor relearn or VIN programming, resulting in misfire codes or a no-start condition.
Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every engine of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:
🔎 Recommended at install: Replace rocker arms and lifters; inspect camshaft lobes for wear. FCA issued revised part numbers.
🔎 Recommended at install: Replace plastic housing with upgraded all-aluminum aftermarket unit (e.g., Dorman 926-876 or 926-959).
🔎 Recommended at install: NHTSA Recall 16V-814 (Chrysler Recall S85) - inspect and replace fuel rail crossover tube.
🔎 Recommended at install: Warranty extended by Chrysler to 10 years/150,000 miles. Left-bank cylinder heads fail due to overheating valve seats.

Policies, in plain English.
Shipping & Handling
- Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
- Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
- The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
- Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance
120-Day Warranty
This part includes a 120-day warranty.
- If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
- Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
- Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation
Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.
Returns (30 Days)
We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.
- Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
- Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
- Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
- Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
- Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited
Damaged in Shipping?
Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:
- Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
- Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
- Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
- Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery
We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.
Order Cancellation
Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
