Know This Engine Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:

  • Confirm the 8th digit of the VIN is 'C'.
  • Verify drivetrain configuration (AWD vs RWD) to transfer the correct oil pan, engine mounts, and intermediate shaft brackets.
  • Inspect existing turbochargers for shaft play, oil pooling, or wastegate wear since they must be reused.
🔎 Where to look: Check the 8th digit of the VIN on the driver's side dashboard or door jamb.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

16 to 22 hoursshop labor2400 to 4400typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Crankshaft Pulley Holding Tool (OTC 4754)
  • Camshaft Alignment/Timing Tool Kit (Ford 303-1655)
  • Quick-Disconnect Tool Set
  • Engine Hoist & Heavy-Duty Load Leveler
  • Ford-specific diagnostic scan tool (IDS/FDRS)
🔌 Wiring harness: Transfer and use your vehicle's original engine wiring harness to ensure full compatibility with vehicle electronics and options across model years and trims.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Crankshaft Pulley Bolt (Torque-to-Yield, single-use)
  • Intake manifold gaskets (upper and lower)
  • Valve cover gaskets
  • Front and rear crankshaft seals
  • Turbocharger mounting gaskets and oil/coolant line O-rings
  • Exhaust manifold gaskets
  • Spark Plugs (Motorcraft SP-578 gapped to 0.028-0.031 in)
  • 6.0 quarts SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic motor oil (Ford WSS-M2C961-A1)
  • Motorcraft FL-500S oil filter
  • Motorcraft Yellow Prediluted Antifreeze/Coolant (Ford WSS-M97B57-A2)
  • Torque-to-Yield (TTY) cylinder head and motor mount bolts (if removed)

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed✅ NoECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Fuel Injector Flow Coding, Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Relearn, and PCM Relearns

The PCM must be programmed with the unique 30-character fuel injector flow codes (IQA codes) of the replacement engine to prevent rough idling and misfires. A CKP sensor profile correction relearn is also required. If swapping the PCM, a Programmable Module Installation (PMI) procedure is required using Ford IDS/FDRS.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Crankshaft Pulley Bolt Torque Sequence: Requires a strict 4-stage torque procedure (Stage 1: 225 Nm / 166 lb-ft, followed by three angle-tightening stages). Failure to use holding tool OTC 4754 or reuse of the bolt will cause timing gear slippage and bent valves.
  • Wet-Belt Driven Oil Pump: Inspect the oil pump belt running in the engine oil while the engine is out. Replace if showing swelling, cracking, or fraying.
  • AWD Power Take-Off Unit (PTU) Alignment: Must align perfectly during installation to prevent intermediate shaft binding, driveline vibrations, and PTU seal damage.
  • Fragile Turbo Coolant Lines: Plastic quick-connect fittings become extremely brittle and are highly prone to snapping during the swap.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Reusing the Crankshaft Pulley Bolt or other Torque-to-Yield (TTY) bolts, leading to timing gear slippage or improper clamping force.
  • Skipping Injector Programming, causing immediate fueling imbalances, rough running, and catalytic converter damage.
  • Ordering for a Transverse Vehicle (Lincoln Continental or MKZ) which uses a completely different cast-iron block and layout.
  • Reusing High-Mileage Cam Phasers instead of replacing them while the engine is already out of the vehicle.
  • Using incorrect fluid specifications (conventional oil or wrong viscosity) which harms the turbochargers and VCT system.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every engine of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeIntake Valve Fracture (NHTSA Recall 24V-635 / Ford Recall 24S55)2021-2022

🔎 Recommended at install: Verify if vehicle is affected; brittle Silchrome Lite alloy valves can crack and drop into the combustion chamber causing catastrophic failure.

severeLow Oil Pressure Warning & MIL (SSM 51764)2020-2023

🔎 Recommended at install: Often caused by an internal oil pressure leak or a failing oil pressure sensor; stores DTCs P0521 and/or P0524.

severeCam Phaser Cold-Start Rattle2020-present

🔎 Recommended at install: Loud rattling/ticking on cold starts due to worn internal locking pin in VCT phaser units. Replace phasers to prevent timing chain stretch.

moderateRear Crankshaft Seal Leak (SSM 53040)2020-2024

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace crankshaft rear seal and retainer assembly.

moderateOil Pan RTV Seal Leak (TSB 24-2101 / SSM 51962)2020-2024

🔎 Recommended at install: Reseal oil pan with fresh RTV silicone sealant.

moderateImproperly Tightened Motor Mounts (Ford Recall 20S72)2020-2021

🔎 Recommended at install: Tighten right-hand motor mount fasteners to specification to prevent vibration or axle disconnection.

minorCarbon Buildup on Intake Valves2020-present

🔎 Recommended at install: Perform intake valve cleaning as needed, as direct-injection-only design does not wash valves with fuel.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 300-10343-4398516). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
