Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Confirm the 8th digit of the VIN is 9.
  • Verify the vehicle is AWD (has a rear driveshaft and rear differential).
  • Confirm the vehicle has the Auto Start-Stop feature.
  • Verify the 'TR' code on the driver's door jamb sticker is 'W'.
  • Locate the Solenoid Strategy Tag on the current transmission to prepare for programming.
🔎 Where to look: Look for the white barcode sticker on the top of the transmission case for the transmission ID (e.g., DG9P-ZA) and the Solenoid Strategy Tag on the side of the case near the main electrical connector.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

7 to 11 hoursshop labor$1,000 to $1,800typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced / ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Engine support bar or hoist
  • Heavy-duty transmission jack
  • Subframe jack
  • CV axle puller/slide hammer
  • Torque wrench
  • Cooler line disconnect tool (e.g., Lisle #39960)
  • Ford-compatible diagnostic scan tool (Ford IDS or FORScan)
🔌 Wiring harness: The wiring harness must support the electric auxiliary fluid pump for the Auto Start-Stop system. Standard non-start-stop harnesses are incompatible.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Motorcraft MERCON LV automatic transmission fluid
  • Torque converter seal
  • Axle seals (both front CV axle seals)
  • High-pressure heated transmission cooler line flush
  • Updated auxiliary pump supply tube with check ball (Ford Part # DG9Z-7890-G)

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

What’s involved: Solenoid Strategy Programming & Adaptive Learning Relearn

The unique 13-digit Solenoid Strategy Code and 7-digit Solenoid ID printed on the transmission case tag must be programmed into the vehicle's PCM using Ford IDS or FORScan. An adaptive learning drive cycle must then be performed.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Must rotate and push inward until it clicks/drops three distinct times. Forcing the bellhousing bolts without full seating will crack the internal oil pump gear.
  • Auxiliary Pump Check-Valve Tube: Discard the old auxiliary pump supply tube and install the updated version (DG9Z-7890-G) to prevent harsh engagement on engine restart.
  • PTU / AWD Spline Lubrication: Clean and lubricate the intermediate shaft splines with high-temperature, water-resistant grease to prevent rust weld and stripping.
  • Strict Fluid Level Check Procedure: No dipstick is present. Fluid level must be checked via the standpipe overflow plug on the side of the case only when the transmission fluid temperature is exactly 185°F to 200°F (85°C to 93°C) with the engine running and vehicle level.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Skipping the Solenoid Strategy Programming, which causes immediate violent shifting, gear slipping, and clutch failure.
  • Ordering a Non-Start-Stop transmission, which lacks the machined mounting bosses and internal fluid ports for the electric auxiliary pump.
  • Ordering a FWD transmission for an AWD vehicle, which lacks the mounting provisions and output splines for the PTU.
  • Reusing a contaminated cooler without a professional high-pressure heated flush, washing debris from the old failure directly into the replacement unit.
  • Not inspecting or replacing the flexplate despite the high failure rate and known cracking issues on this engine/transmission combination.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeCracked Flexplate (Customer Satisfaction Program 22N12)2019-2020

🔎 Recommended at install: Thoroughly inspect the vehicle's flexplate before bolting up the replacement transmission; replace if cracked to prevent damage to the front fluid pump and torque converter.

severeDegraded Shifter Cable Bushing (NHTSA Recall 22V-413 / Ford Recall 22S43)2019-2020

🔎 Recommended at install: Always install a new, updated heavy-duty shifter bushing and protective cap during installation.

moderateHarsh 'Bang' or Violent Engagement on Restart (TSB 16-0111 / DTC P0C27)2019-2020 (with active start-stop)

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace the auxiliary pump supply tube with an updated version containing an internal check ball (Ford Part # DG9Z-7890-G).

severeCase Bore Wear (Passenger-Side Axle-Driven Sprocket Bearing)6F35 family

🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect the passenger-side axle output bore on the replacement unit for play or fluid leakage before installing.

severeCracked Direct Clutch Hub6F35 and 6F55 families

🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect internal clutch components if transmission is opened; affects 3rd and 5th gear shifts.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-10808-5035635). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
