Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Verify the JATCO stamp code is 70X7B.
  • Confirm the vehicle is AWD (has a rear driveshaft and rear differential).
  • Confirm the engine is the 2.0L 4-cylinder (MR20DD).
🔎 Where to look: Look at the top of your current transmission case or the barcode label on the range switch for stamp code 70X7B.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

6 to 11 hoursshop labor$720 to $2,200typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Engine support bar/hoist
  • Subframe adapter/jack
  • CVT Fluid Level Quick Check Gauge (J-51155)
  • Charge Pipe Cap Release tool (J-52611)
  • Nissan CONSULT-III Plus scan tool (or high-end J2534 bi-directional scan tool)
🔌 Wiring harness: Older 2017-2019 models feature different valve-body calibrations, solenoid wiring, and TCM programming, making them electronically incompatible.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Nissan NS-3 CVT Fluid ONLY
  • CVT Oil Pan Gasket
  • Internal metal mesh strainer/filter
  • External paper cartridge filter
  • Torque-Converter Seal (front pump/input shaft seal)
  • Axle seals
  • Dedicated transmission cooler cleaner/flush (Nissan P/N 999MP-AM006)

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

What’s involved: TCM Calibration Data Write (IP Characteristics)

Every individual Jatco CVT8 transmission is manufactured with unique hydraulic tolerances. These specific flow rates are programmed into a calibration file unique to that transmission's serial number. You must write the replacement transmission's calibration data into your vehicle's TCM using a Nissan CONSULT-III Plus or compatible J2534 tool.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Must click or drop in three distinct stages (recessed 1/2 to 3/4 inch). If not fully seated, bolting the transmission to the engine will crush the internal oil pump gear.
  • Mandatory Cooler Line Flushing: Metal debris from the failed unit must be flushed out to prevent immediate clogging of the replacement unit's sensitive solenoids.
  • TCM Calibration Data Write: The replacement transmission's unique calibration file must be written to the TCM to prevent immediate belt slippage and DTC P17F0/P17F1.
  • Fluid Level Check Procedure: Must use the overflow plug method with fluid warmed to between 95°F and 113°F (35°C to 45°C) with the engine running in Park on a level surface.
  • Reset Degradation Counter: The CVT Fluid Degradation counter in the TCM must be reset to zero using a scan tool after the fluid change.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Reusing the old calibration or skipping the mandatory TCM programming.
  • Using generic, aftermarket, or older NS-2 CVT fluid instead of genuine Nissan NS-3 fluid.
  • Forcing the bellhousing bolts when the torque converter is not fully seated, crushing the oil pump.
  • Blindly dumping fluid without performing the proper overflow level check at the correct temperature.
  • Skipping the transmission cooler flush, leading to immediate contamination and failure.
  • Not replacing the external paper cartridge filter.
  • Incorrectly diagnosing a faulty sensor, bad ground, or AWD control unit issue as a complete transmission failure.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeCVT Shudder / Belt Slippage2020-2023

🔎 Recommended at install: Highly sensitive to fluid degradation. Loss of hydraulic clamping pressure causes steel belt to slip. Requires regular fluid changes and potential valve body replacement.

moderateTSB #NTB20-069: Vibration or judder from rear during low-speed turns2020 Rogue Sport AWD

🔎 Recommended at install: Typically caused by the AWD coupling/transfer assembly rather than the transmission internals.

moderateTSB #NTB17-003D: Fluid leak at right-side drive shaft oil seal2020 Rogue Sport AWD

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace the right-side drive shaft oil seal on the transfer assembly concurrently during the transmission swap.

minorTSB #NTB18-055E: Fluid level verification2020-2023

🔎 Recommended at install: Use special CVT Fluid Level Quick Check Gauge (Tool J-51155) as these transmissions are sealed.

severeOverheating and Limp Mode2020-2023

🔎 Recommended at install: Ensure cooling system is functioning properly and perform regular fluid changes.

moderateNHTSA Recall 23V-093 / Nissan R22C8: Jackknife-style ignition key collapse2017-2022

🔎 Recommended at install: Address key recall to prevent abrupt engine shutdown which can affect the driveline.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-10760-4801751). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
