Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Confirm the 8th digit of the VIN is 'T' (designating the 5.7L Hemi V8 engine).
  • Verify the vehicle is 4WD/4x4 (has a front driveshaft and transfer case).
  • Verify the main electrical plug connector on the driver's side of the transmission is Grey.
🔎 Where to look: Locate the metal stamp or barcode sticker on the driver's side of the transmission case just above the oil pan. Confirm it matches 68051224AA, 68051224AB, RL051224AM, 52119452AA, or 5086269AA.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

4-9shop labor600-1500typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvancedDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Heavy-duty transmission jack
  • Bi-directional scan tool (capable of TCM Quick Learn)
  • Metric socket sets (10mm to 18mm)
  • Wobble adapters
  • Long extensions
  • Torque wrench
  • Flare nut wrenches
🔌 Wiring harness: Ensure the solenoid pack connector color matches your vehicle's wiring harness (Grey connector for 2009+ models). Mismatched connectors will cause immediate diagnostic codes and limp-in mode.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Licensed Mopar ATF+4 fluid
  • 4WD-specific flat sump filter (with longer pickup snout)
  • OEM-spec spin-on cooler return filter (with anti-drainback valve)
  • High-quality RTV (Mopar ATF-RTV) or LubeLocker pan gasket
  • Front pump input shaft / torque converter seal
  • Transmission cooler line flush solvent

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration✅ Nodealer tool needed✅ NoECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: TCM/PCM Quick Learn Procedure

A TCM/PCM Quick Learn procedure is mandatory immediately after installation to reset adaptive shift parameters and learn the hydraulic properties of the replacement unit. Skipping this step will cause the computer to apply incorrect line pressures based on the old transmission's wear patterns, leading to harsh shifts, clutch slippage, and immediate internal damage.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Must rotate and click/drop three distinct times until fully recessed (at least 1/2 inch from bellhousing face). Forcing the bellhousing bolts with an unseated converter will crack the front pump gear and destroy the unit.
  • The Sump Filter Seal Trap: The old metal-and-rubber neck seal (grommet) must be pried out of the pump bore before installing the new filter. Double-gasketing will cause the pump to suck air, cavitate, whine, and burn up the transmission.
  • Spin-on Filter Torque: Hand-tighten plus 3/4 turn only. Over-tightening can crack the plastic threaded snout on the filter adapter.
  • Thermal Bypass Valve (TBV): Must be thoroughly flushed or replaced to prevent trapped metal debris from contaminating the replacement unit.
  • Dowel Pin Alignment: Ensure alignment dowels are clean and present. Do not use bolts to force the transmission to the engine block.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Ordering a 2WD transmission for a 4WD truck (output shafts are different lengths and require a complete teardown to swap).
  • Leaving the old sump filter seal in the pump bore (causes air suction and immediate slipping).
  • Using non-ATF+4 fluid (generic multi-vehicle or Dexron fluids cause chatter, slipping, and rapid clutch wear).
  • Skipping the TCM Quick Learn procedure (causes immediate harsh shifting and premature clutch failure).
  • Not flushing the cooler lines and thermal bypass valve (circulates old metal shavings and debris directly into the replacement unit).

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-00696-4212758). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
