What’s involved: Fuel Injector Calibration / Coding, Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor relearn, and camshaft adaptation reset.
If you reuse your original ECM, immobilizer re-marriage is not required. However, if the replacement engine's injectors are used, their specific flow-rate calibration codes must be programmed into your ECM using a dealer-level scan tool (JLR SDD) so the engine runs correctly. Adaptive relearns for the throttle body, transmission (TCM), and crankshaft position sensor are also required.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- Torque-to-Yield (TTY) Bolts: The crankshaft pulley bolt, camshaft phaser bolts, and cylinder head bolts are stretch bolts and must be replaced.
- Fuel Injector Teflon Seals: When transferring direct fuel injectors, you must replace the Teflon seals at the tips using a special sizing tool kit (OEM # 310-198) to prevent fuel leaks or combustion chamber blow-by.
- AWD Transfer Case & Front Differential: The front differential bolts directly to the side of the engine oil pan, and an intermediate drive shaft passes through a tube in the oil pan. Carefully align and transfer your front differential and intermediate shaft, replacing the shaft seals.
- Supercharger Transfer & Rear Crossover Pipe: Replace the rear coolant crossover pipe and heater hoses while the supercharger is off, as doing this later is extremely difficult.
- Vacuum Coolant Bleeding: The 5.0L cooling system is extremely prone to air pockets. You must use a vacuum coolant filling tool to refill the system to prevent localized boiling and instant head gasket failure.

- Reusing Brittle Plastic Coolant Pipes: Reusing the original plastic crossover pipes almost always results in a crack shortly after installation, leading to sudden overheating and engine destruction.
- Reusing Fuel Injector Teflon Seals: Attempting to slide old injectors into the new cylinder heads without replacing and properly sizing the Teflon seals, leading to misfires and fuel leaks.
- Using Generic Engine Oil: Using standard off-the-shelf oil that does not meet the STJLR.03.5004 specification, which rapidly accelerates timing chain wear.
- Buying for a Naturally Aspirated Vehicle: Attempting to buy this supercharged engine block to install into a naturally aspirated Range Rover Sport or LR4. The compression ratio is completely different.
- Ignoring the snout isolator: Transferring the supercharger without replacing the snout isolator, risking a loud rattling noise on first startup.
- Prying on fuel injectors: Trying to pry stuck injectors out with a screwdriver, which breaks the injector body.
