Know This Engine Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:

  • Check the 8th digit of your vehicle's VIN. It must be Y. If it is M or L, you have the naturally aspirated version, and this engine will not fit.
  • Confirm whether your vehicle is Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) or All-Wheel Drive (AWD) to determine if you need to swap the oil pan and transfer case brackets.
  • Physically inspect your original turbocharger, wastegate actuator, and exhaust manifold to ensure they are in good, reusable condition to transfer.
🔎 Where to look: Verify the engine code PY is stamped directly on the engine block flange where it mates with the transmission housing (on the rear side of the block), or check the emissions label for PY-VPTS.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

11 to 15 hoursshop labor$1,500 to $2,500 USDtypical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced / ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Mazda MZR/Skyactiv Timing Tool Kit (camshaft alignment plate and crankshaft TDC timing peg)
  • Fuel Injector Seal Installer/Sizer Tool
  • Engine hoist and load leveler
  • Bi-directional scan tool
🔌 Wiring harness: You must reuse your original engine wiring harness. Ensure all ground straps are clean, corrosion-free, and securely reattached.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • 5.1 US quarts (4.8 Liters) of SAE 5W-30 API SN/SP or ILSAC GF-6 engine oil
  • New OEM Mazda oil filter (Part # 1WPE-14-302 or equivalent)
  • Mazda Genuine FL22 Extended Life Coolant (pre-diluted 55/45)
  • New OEM NGK Iridium spark plugs (gapped to 0.028-0.031 in / 0.7-0.8 mm)
  • Intake manifold gasket
  • Exhaust manifold gasket
  • Turbocharger inlet/outlet gaskets and oil feed/drain line copper washers
  • Valve cover gasket (if removed)
  • Fuel injector Teflon seals (must be replaced if injectors are removed)
  • New OEM turbocharger oil feed and return lines
  • New OEM torque-to-yield bolts (crankshaft pulley bolt, cylinder head bolts)

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed✅ NoECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Relearn and Fuel Injector Calibration

If you reuse your original ECU/PCM, you do not need to reprogram the immobilizer. However, you must perform a CKP sensor relearn so the ECU can accurately detect misfires. Additionally, if you use the direct fuel injectors that come with this replacement engine, you must program the injector calibration codes into your ECU. To avoid this programming step, you can transfer your original injectors to this replacement engine in their exact original cylinder positions.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Friction-Fit Crankshaft Pulley (No Keyway): The crankshaft pulley does not have a keyway. You must NEVER loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt without the proper Mazda timing alignment tools installed, or the engine will instantly slip out of time and cause catastrophic valve-to-piston contact.
  • Direct Injector Teflon Seals: Direct injectors use one-time-use Teflon seals. If you pull the injectors, you must use a special sizing tool to compress the new Teflon seals before installing them, or they will leak compression and fuel.
  • AWD vs. FWD Oil Pan and Intermediate Shaft: If your vehicle is AWD and this engine was configured for a FWD model (or vice versa), you must swap the oil pan and the intermediate shaft mounting brackets to clear the transfer case (PTU).
  • Torque-to-Yield (TTY) Bolts: The crankshaft pulley bolt, cylinder head bolts, and certain suspension/subframe bolts are stretch bolts and must never be reused.
  • Turbocharger Transfer: Because this unit ships without the turbo, you must transfer your original turbocharger and exhaust manifold. Replace the turbo oil feed line with a new OEM part to prevent starving your turbo of oil.
  • Plastic Intake and Boost Pipes: The plastic intake manifold and charge pipes become brittle from heat cycling. Handle them carefully during the swap to avoid cracking them.
  • AWD PTU (Transfer Case) Alignment: Transferring the Power Take-Off Unit (PTU) requires careful alignment and fresh spline grease to avoid post-install gear oil leaks.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Reusing the Crankshaft Pulley Bolt or loosening it without the proper timing tools.
  • Mixing up fuel injectors or failing to program their calibration codes into the computer.
  • Using non-FL22 coolant, which can react with residual coolant and create a gel-like sludge.
  • Forgetting to transfer AWD-specific brackets and oil pan from the original engine.
  • Reusing old metal gaskets or oil feed lines on the transferred turbocharger.
  • Using 0W-20 oil instead of the required 5W-30 oil for the Turbo variant.
  • Skipping the PCM/CKP relearn, leading to rough idling, misfires under boost, or check engine lights.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every engine of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeDefective Valve Stem Seals / Excessive Oil Consumption (TSB 01-011/22 / Special Service Program SSPD5)2021-2022 (built before September 2021)

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace the exhaust-side valve stem seals with the updated design.

severeCylinder Head Gasket Leaks / Cracked Cylinder Head (TSB 01-002/23 / Customer Service Program CSP11)2016-2020 (and some early 2021 models)

🔎 Recommended at install: The 2023 donor engine features the updated cylinder head design (part number PYY1-10-SJ0C) which resolves this issue. Monitor for external coolant leaks.

moderateExhaust Manifold Variable Valve Seizing (TSB SA-045-21c)2020-2021

🔎 Recommended at install: Address seized variable valve in the exhaust manifold to prevent uneven exhaust valve seat wear and misfires.

moderateOil Solenoid Valve Contamination (TSB 01-004-23)2021

🔎 Recommended at install: Clean or replace the engine oil solenoid valve if stuck due to contamination.

moderateFront Timing Cover Oil Leak (TSB 01-002/25)2019-2021

🔎 Recommended at install: Remove the front timing cover and reseal using fresh RTV sealant.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 300-10656-5078870). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
