A GM-compatible scan tool (such as GM MDI 2 with GDS2/SPS2 software) is required to perform the Crankshaft Position Relearn and security synchronization. Skipping this will cause misfire codes (P0300), a flashing check engine light, disabled traction control, or a crank-no-start condition.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- Single-Use High-Pressure Fuel Line: The fuel pipe connecting the high-pressure pump to the rails is a torque-to-yield, single-use component. Reusing it will cause a high-pressure fuel leak and engine fire.
- Crankshaft Pilot Bearing (AT vs MT Swap): This donor engine is from an automatic vehicle and has no pilot bearing. If installing into a manual transmission vehicle, you MUST install a new clutch pilot bearing (GM P/N 12557583). If swapping a manual engine into an automatic, you must remove the pilot bearing to prevent torque converter damage.
- Active Fuel Management (AFM) Differences: Automatic cars use active AFM lifters and exhaust flow control valves. Manual cars have AFM lifters physically installed but disabled in the ECU. Ensure correct ECU calibration during cross-swaps.
- Fragile High-Pressure Fuel Injectors: Direct injectors are easily damaged. Never pry on fuel rails or injectors. Replace Teflon seals using tool EN-51105 if removed.
- Cooling System Bleeding: Modern LT cooling passages are complex. Ensure all air is purged to prevent localized overheating.
- Grounding: Ensure all engine-to-chassis ground straps are clean and secure to prevent electrical and sensor errors.

- Reusing the single-use high-pressure fuel pipe to save money, leading to immediate fuel leaks or engine fires.
- Using the hydraulic 'bread trick' or grease method to remove the pilot bearing. The Gen V LT1 crankshaft has a hollow center with a pressed-in steel oil galley plug; hydraulic force will push this plug into the oil pan, causing a massive oil leak.
- Neglecting the mandatory Crankshaft Position (CKP) Relearn, leading to misfire codes (P0300) and disabled traction control.
- Ordering a Camaro LT1 engine for a Silverado (L86/L87) or Corvette, resulting in incompatible oil pans, accessory drives, and water pumps.
- Ignoring the security/immobilizer relearn, resulting in a 'crank no-start' condition after installation.
