Know This Engine Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:

  • Verify the 8th digit of the VIN is '3' to confirm original LFX equipment.
  • Confirm drivetrain configuration (4x2 vs 4x4) to prepare for oil pan/bracket transfer if 4x4.
  • Check the RPO code on the Service Parts Identification label (glove box lid) for 'LFX'.
  • Verify the model year is 2015 or 2016 (2017+ models use the non-interchangeable LGZ engine).
🔎 Where to look: Check the public VIN plate at the base of the windshield or on the driver's door jamb sticker for an 8th digit of '3', and check the glove box lid for RPO code 'LFX'.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

10 to 20 hoursshop labor1200 to 3500typical shop bill, on top of the partExpert / AdvancedDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Engine hoist/crane with heavy-duty load leveler
  • GM Timing Chain Holding Tools (EN-48383 or EN-46105)
  • High-pressure fuel line quick-disconnect tool
  • Professional-grade OBD2 scan tool with Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn capability
  • Engine stand
  • Comprehensive metric socket and wrench set
  • Torque wrenches
🔌 Wiring harness: The engine wiring harness must match the longitudinal truck-specific LFX configuration. Wiring harnesses from transverse (FWD) LFX models are entirely incompatible.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Fresh synthetic 5W-30 engine oil meeting GM Dexos1 specifications (approx. 6 quarts)
  • Premium cartridge-style oil filter (ACDelco PF2129G or equivalent)
  • Fresh GM-approved Dex-Cool coolant (50/50 pre-diluted or mixed with distilled water)
  • Pre-gapped iridium spark plugs
  • Upper and lower intake manifold plenum gaskets
  • Thermostat and housing assembly / gasket
  • Front and rear crankshaft main seals (highly recommended)
  • Oil pan gasket (mandatory if transferring pan for 4x4 application)
  • New accessory drive / serpentine belt
  • Throttle body gasket
  • Exhaust flange gaskets

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

What’s involved: Crankshaft Position (CKP) System Variation Learn

Whenever the engine is replaced, a Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn must be performed to calibrate the relationship between the crankshaft position sensor and the reluctor ring. Skipping this will trigger a persistent check engine light (DTC P0315), false misfire codes, or cause the engine to run in a reduced power mode. Requires a dealer-level scan tool (such as GM GDS2) or a high-end professional diagnostic scanner.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Crankshaft Position (CKP) Relearn must not be skipped to ensure accurate misfire detection.
  • Integrated exhaust manifold bolts are highly prone to rusting and snapping off inside the aluminum cylinder head; apply penetrating oil hours before removal.
  • The direct-injection system operates at up to 2,000+ PSI; safely relieve pressure before disconnecting. The high-pressure fuel crossover pipe is a one-time-use crush-seal component and must be replaced.
  • The harmonic balancer bolt and flywheel/flexplate bolts are torque-to-yield (TTY) and cannot be reused; new OEM bolts must be purchased.
  • The A/C compressor slides onto a long mounting rod anchored to the block; the entire compressor support bracket must be unbolted from the block as a single assembly to remove it from the tight engine bay.
  • The composite intake manifold can be brittle on higher-mileage engines; use care during removal and installation to avoid cracking, especially with hard-to-access rear bolts.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Reusing the high-pressure fuel pipe, which uses a single-use crush flare to seal; reusing it presents an extreme engine bay fire hazard due to high-pressure fuel spray.
  • Skipping the thermostat replacement during the swap; replacing it later while the engine is in the truck is a highly frustrating 3-to-4-hour job due to tight firewall clearance.
  • Neglecting the Crankshaft Position Relearn, which prevents the ECU from detecting actual engine misfires and can lead to catalytic converter damage.
  • Using cheap, non-Dexos-approved oil or extending oil change intervals beyond 5,000 miles, which rapidly accelerates timing chain guide wear.
  • Ignoring the VIN code and ordering based on year/model alone, resulting in receiving an incompatible FWD engine configuration.
  • Not checking and filling the oil level immediately before the first start after shipping.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every engine of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeTiming Chain Wear & Stretch2015-2016

🔎 Recommended at install: Regular oil changes with high-quality synthetic oil. Symptoms include cold start rattle and DTCs P0008, P0009, P0016, P0017, P0018, or P0019. Left unaddressed, it can cause catastrophic valve-to-piston damage.

severeEngine Knocking & Replacement Guidelines2015-2016

🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect for timing chain idler sprocket stiffness, oil sludging, and global oil starvation. GM recommends complete engine replacement rather than repair if these are present.

moderateDirect Injection Carbon Buildup2015-2016

🔎 Recommended at install: Walnut blasting procedure every 70,000 to 100,000 miles to clean carbon deposits off intake valves.

moderatePCV Orifice Clogging & Oil Consumption2015-2016

🔎 Recommended at install: Monitor oil levels regularly (GM considers up to 1 qt per 2,000 miles within spec). Clean PCV system to prevent high crankcase pressure from blowing out seals.

moderateTransmission Cooler Line Unseated2015-2016

🔎 Recommended at install: Ensure transmission oil cooler lines at the radiator are fully seated and secured to prevent fluid leaks.

moderateLoose Battery Cable Connections2015-2016

🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect and secure battery cable connections at the fuse/junction block and alternator/generator.

moderateTransmission Shudder2015-2016

🔎 Recommended at install: Addresses torque converter clutch slippage in the 6L50 automatic transmission paired with the LFX.

moderateLoss of Power Steering Assist2015

🔎 Recommended at install: Address poor electrical connection in the steering gear.

moderateMain Body Wiring Harness Routing2015

🔎 Recommended at install: Reposition main body wiring harness that could be routed too close to the cylinder head to prevent no-start, reduced power, or stalling.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 300-05086G-5448266). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
