Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Verify the vehicle is a 2.0L Turbo AWD model (not the 1.3L Plug-in Hybrid, 2.4L Tigershark, or 3.2L Pentastar).
  • Confirm the vehicle is equipped with the single-speed transfer case (Option Code DFH).
  • Locate the barcode label/ID tag on the top of the original transmission case (under the shifter cable bracket) or side of the housing and verify the part number matches.
🔎 Where to look: Barcode label on top of the transmission case under the shifter cable bracket, or a metal ID tag on the side of the housing containing a 10-digit part number.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

7 to 12 hoursshop labor$1,000 to $2,200typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced to ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Engine support fixture
  • Subframe jack or transmission jack
  • Mopar Fluid Level Dipstick Tool (P/N 10323A)
  • High-end diagnostic scan tool (wiTECH 2.0 or equivalent with Secure Gateway access)
🔌 Wiring harness: Requires Secure Gateway Module (SGW) access or bypass harness to write VIN and perform PROXI alignment.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Mopar ZF 8 & 9 Speed ATF (P/N 68157995AB / 68218925AB) or ZF LifeguardFluid 9 (pale green/blue low-viscosity fluid)
  • Front pump/torque converter neck seal (Mopar P/N 4752960AA or ZF equivalent)
  • Axle seals
  • Thermal bypass valve (Mopar P/N 68203460AA)
  • Transmission cooler flush solvent

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: TCM VIN Verification, PROXI Configuration Alignment, and TCM Adaptive Relearn ('Quick Learn' / 'Valve Body Solenoid Learn')

A professional scan tool (such as factory wiTECH 2.0 or advanced software like AlfaOBD/Multiecuscan with an SGW bypass harness) is required to write the vehicle's VIN to the replacement TCM, perform a PROXI configuration alignment, and execute the 'Quick Learn' procedure. Failure to perform these steps will result in a flashing odometer, communication trouble codes, and the transmission locking itself in Park or entering limp mode.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated (three distinct 'drops' or clicks) before bolting to the engine. Tightening the bellhousing bolts with an unseated converter will instantly crack the front oil pump gear.
  • Thermal Bypass Valve Replacement: If the original transmission suffered a mechanical failure, metal debris is trapped inside the bypass valve. You must replace the thermal bypass valve (Mopar P/N 68203460AA) and flush the cooler thoroughly.
  • Fluid Level Check Temperature: Checking fluid level is highly temperature-sensitive. The engine must be running in Park, and fluid temperature must be between 122°F and 140°F (50°C to 60°C) using Mopar Tool 10323A inserted into the fill port near the differential.
  • Dowel Pins: Ensure the alignment dowel pins between the engine and transmission are clean and in place to prevent misalignment.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Using the Wrong Fluid: Filling with standard red ATF+4 or generic multi-vehicle fluid instead of the required green ZF Lifeguard 9 fluid.
  • Forcing the Bellhousing Bolts: Using the bolts to draw the transmission case tight against the engine block when the torque converter is not fully seated.
  • Skipping the PROXI Alignment and Quick Learn: Attempting to drive the vehicle without performing the required electronic programming, leading to harsh shifting, slipping, or limp mode.
  • Ordering for the Wrong Vehicle: Ordering this transmission for a Honda, Acura, or other non-Stellantis vehicle just because they also use a 'ZF 9-speed'.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-10910-4055996). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
