rwd donor transmission code 8HP50
This is a used part. For vehicles with the 3.6L engine and an 8-speed automatic transmission. Fits rear-wheel drive (RWD) models with transmission code 8HP50 (option code DFW).

This is an 8-speed, 8HP50 model automatic transmission that fits Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles with the 3.6L V6 engine only. It is not compatible with All-Wheel Drive (AWD) models. Please verify your vehicle has the 8HP50 transmission (sales code DFW), as it will not interchange with other 8-speed models (such as the 845RE or 850RE) offered in the same vehicles.

Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Verify the 8th digit of the VIN to confirm 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine.
  • Physically look under the car to confirm it is Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD).
  • Check the vehicle build sheet to confirm transmission sales code DFW (8HP50) rather than DFT (850RE).
🔎 Where to look: Locate the metal identification tag/stamped pad on the driver's side rear bottom of the main transmission case. Confirm it displays model code 8HP50 and Mopar part number 68456184AA.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

5-9shop labor750-1800typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced to ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Transmission jack
  • Metric socket set (including E-Torx)
  • Torque wrench
  • Fluid transfer pump
  • Professional-grade diagnostic scanner (wiTECH or AlfaOBD)
🔌 Wiring harness: Exhaust mid-pipes run directly under the transmission on Charger/Challenger and must be dropped to access the main transmission harness connector.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Mopar 8 & 9 Speed ATF (Part #68218925AB) or ZF LifeguardFluid 8
  • New plastic transmission pan assembly with integrated filter, gasket, and drain plug
  • Torque-converter front pump seal
  • Driveshaft seals
  • Transmission cooler-line flush solvent

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: VIN-specific programming/alignment AND TCM Adaptive Relearn (Quick Learn)

The TCM is integrated into the valve body and is VIN-locked. You must either swap your original mechatronic assembly into the replacement transmission, or have a professional clone the original TCM data/perform a VIN alignment using a factory scan tool (wiTECH). A TCM Adaptive Relearn (Quick Learn) is required with fluid at operating temperature.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Must feel three distinct drops/clicks. If not fully seated, bolting the bellhousing will crack the front pump and destroy the unit.
  • Fluid Fill and Leveling: No dipstick. Must be checked via the side fill plug with the vehicle perfectly level, engine running, and fluid temperature strictly between 86°F and 122°F (30°C to 50°C).
  • Torque Converter Bolts: Accessed by removing the starter motor, not through a typical inspection cover.
  • Cooler Line Flush: Must perform a complete flush to prevent old metallic debris from contaminating the replacement unit.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Ordering for the wrong engine (V8 Hemi transmissions will not bolt up to the 3.6L V6).
  • Ordering an AWD version for a RWD vehicle.
  • Confusing the ZF-manufactured 8HP50 (DFW) with the Chrysler-manufactured 850RE (DFT), leading to park-detection and communication errors.
  • Reusing the old plastic pan/filter which contains debris from the previous failure.
  • Improper fluid leveling (filling while the engine is off, leading to being 3-4 quarts underfilled).
  • Using generic or incorrect ATF (such as ATF+4) instead of ZF-approved fluid.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-10827-5262252). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
