The internal TEHCM is VIN-locked. It must be programmed using GM SPS2/GDS2 before starting the engine to prevent oil pump damage. Alternatively, swap the original functional TEHCM into the replacement unit. An adaptive relearn is required after installation.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

• Torque converter must be fully seated (three distinct clicks/drops) before bolting transmission to engine to avoid cracking the front pump.
• Do not start the engine before programming the TEHCM, or the oil pump may fail immediately.
• Fluid level must be checked with no dipstick: vehicle level, engine running, fluid temperature between 86°F and 122°F (30°C to 50°C), via the level-check plug.
• AWD transfer case input shaft splines must be clean, lubricated, and properly aligned during installation.
• Use an ESD wrist strap when handling or swapping the TEHCM to prevent static damage.

Easy to get right once you know them:

• Attempting to drive the vehicle without programming the TEHCM or swapping the original one.
• Failing to fully seat the torque converter, resulting in a crushed front pump upon bellhousing bolt tightening.
• Checking fluid level with the engine off or at the incorrect temperature, leading to severe under/overfilling.
