Know This Engine Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:

  • Check the 5th digit of the VIN (must be 'B')
  • Verify the engine code on the timing cover sticker or block stamping (must be CURA, MCU.RA, or MCX.ZA)
  • Confirm the vehicle is an AWD Cayenne S or GTS trim
  • Ensure existing turbochargers, exhaust manifolds, and lines are in good working condition to transfer over
🔎 Where to look: Look at the barcode sticker on your original engine's timing cover or the stamping on the block for CURA, MCU.RA, or MCX.ZA.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

15 to 25 hoursshop labor$2,500 to $5,000typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Engine hoist or under-car engine lift table
  • Porsche-specific camshaft alignment/timing tool kit
  • Triple-square (XZN) socket set
  • Torque angle gauge and high-quality torque wrenches
  • Bolt extraction kit
  • Porsche-compatible diagnostic tool (PIWIS, Launch X431, or Autel MaxiSYS)
🔌 Wiring harness: The wiring harness must be carefully routed. It is highly recommended to reuse your original engine wiring harness to avoid minor pinout or connector differences between model years or trim levels.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Engine oil meeting Porsche A40 specification (typically 0W-40 or 5W-40 synthetic oil)
  • New OE-specification oil filter
  • Porsche-approved pink/violet coolant (G12++ or G13 spec) mixed 50/50 with distilled water
  • Valve cover gaskets (left and right)
  • Intake and exhaust manifold gaskets
  • Turbocharger mounting gaskets, oil feed/drain line O-rings, and coolant line seals
  • Front and rear main crankshaft seals
  • Fresh set of OEM Bosch or NGK spark plugs and new ignition coils
  • One-time use high-pressure fuel lines
  • Upgraded steel/titanium timing cover bolt kit

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Model-dependentprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Immobilizer/Security Re-marriage and Sensor Adaptations

sources differ: Arm 1 states no immobilizer re-marriage is required if keeping the original ECU, only sensor adaptations (throttle body, injector coding). Arm 2 states security/immobilizer re-marriage is required to sync the replacement engine with the vehicle's systems or it will not start. A dealer-level tool like PIWIS is required.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • The factory aluminum timing cover bolts are highly fragile and prone to snapping. Replace them with upgraded steel bolts (Porsche Part #999-073-913-31) while the engine is on the stand.
  • High-pressure fuel lines are torque-to-yield and must not be reused to prevent fuel leaks and engine fires.
  • Take detailed photos of the complex vacuum routing before disassembly to avoid underboost/overboost codes.
  • Ensure perfect spline alignment when mating the engine to the transmission and front differential to avoid cracking the transmission pump or engine block.
  • The plastic coolant vent lines in the 'V' of the engine are extremely brittle and prone to breaking during handling; replace them proactively.
  • The transfer case must be carefully separated from the transmission and re-sealed upon installation.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Ordering this twin-turbo V6 engine for a base-model Cayenne which uses a naturally aspirated 3.6L VR6 engine.
  • Reusing the one-time-use aluminum timing cover bolts or high-pressure fuel lines.
  • Not performing a walnut blasting or manual carbon cleaning on the intake valves while the engine is out.
  • Assuming driveline jerking is purely an engine issue when it is actually a failed transfer case.
  • Underestimating the high labor costs and complexity of dropping the front subframe to perform the swap.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every engine of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeTiming Chain Cover Oil Leak / Sheared Aluminum Bolts (TSB #1533 / NHTSA ID #10166908 / #10190762)2015–2018

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace factory aluminum bolts with upgraded steel/titanium timing cover bolts before installing the engine.

🔎 Recommended at install: Proactively replace the plastic coolant vent lines/Y-pipe located in the 'V' of the engine during the swap.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 300-88062-5368759). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
