Know This Engine Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:

  • Verify that the 8th digit of your VIN is 'N'.
  • Confirm your engine is a 3-cylinder variant.
  • Identify if your vehicle is FWD or AWD to prepare for potential oil pan or PTU bracket transfers.
🔎 Where to look: Check the 17-character VIN plate at the base of the driver's side windshield, or locate the engine code stamp on the side of the engine block near the cylinder head.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

12 to 20 hoursshop labor$1,500 to $3,000typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Ford EcoBoost 1.5L 3-Cylinder Timing Tool Kit (including crankshaft TDC timing peg 303-507 and crankshaft position sensor alignment tool 303-1521)
  • Vacuum Coolant Refilling Tool
  • Engine Hoist / Crane
  • Engine Stand
  • Torque Wrench
  • Scan Tool with programming/relearn capabilities
🔌 Wiring harness: The engine wiring harness is not included. You must retain and reuse the wiring harness from your original vehicle to ensure compatibility with your specific model year and drivetrain.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Engine Oil (approx. 5.9 quarts meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C960-A1, WSS-M2C947-B1, or WSS-M2C963-A1)
  • New OEM Motorcraft Oil Filter
  • Ford Yellow Pre-Mixed Coolant meeting specification WSS-M2C965-A1 (VC-13-G)
  • New Motorcraft Iridium Spark Plugs
  • New Intake and Exhaust Manifold Gaskets
  • New Thermostat Gasket
  • New Fuel Injector O-rings
  • New Rear Main Seal (highly recommended)
  • New Torque-to-Yield (stretch) Crankshaft Pulley Bolt
  • New Timing Belt & Tensioner (highly recommended during swap)

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Relearn / Misfire Monitor Profile Correction & PCM Parameter Reset / PATS Relearn

Requires a Ford-compatible diagnostic scan tool (such as Ford IDS, FDRS, or FORScan) to perform the Misfire Profile Correction and Programmable Module Installation (PMI) / parameter reset to sync the replacement engine's sensors with the vehicle's computer and security system.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • AWD vs. FWD Oil Pan Transfer: If swapping between AWD and FWD platforms, you must transfer your original engine's oil pan and accessory brackets to accommodate the Power Transfer Unit (PTU).
  • Cooling System Vacuum Bleeding: You must use a vacuum-lift coolant tool to refill the system. Gravity-filling will trap air in the cylinder head, causing localized hot spots and immediate head warping.
  • Fragile Cylinder Deactivation Solenoid: Located on the top-right side of the engine; easily crushed by hoist chains during installation.
  • Torque-to-Yield (TTY) Bolts: Critical fasteners (crankshaft pulley, camshaft phasers) are single-use only and must be replaced to prevent catastrophic timing failure.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Ordering for the wrong model year (confusing the 2017-2019 4-cylinder with this 3-cylinder engine).
  • Ordering for a 2020-2022 Escape (VIN 6) instead of the revised 2023-2025 Escape (VIN N).
  • Assuming the turbocharger is included in the assembly.
  • Reusing single-use Torque-to-Yield (TTY) bolts.
  • Skipping the mandatory scan-tool crankshaft relearn and PCM parameter reset, resulting in a no-start condition or false misfire codes.
  • Using incorrect or generic engine oil/coolant, which degrades the wet timing belt.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every engine of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeCracked Fuel Injector & Underhood Fire Risk2020–2024

🔎 Recommended at install: NHTSA Recall 24S16 / 22S73 / 23V-867. Dealerships install a dedicated drain tube and update PCM software to detect pressure drops.

severeWet Oil Pump Belt / Timing Belt DegradationAll

🔎 Recommended at install: Strictly adhere to oil change intervals and use only Ford-specified oil. Degraded belt material clogs the oil pickup screen, causing oil starvation.

moderateWater Pump Leaks / Coolant Loss2021–2024

🔎 Recommended at install: TSB 25-2581, 25-2063. Flush cooling system and replace the water pump.

minorOil Separator Housing Cracks2020-2022

🔎 Recommended at install: Recall campaign to address potential cracks that lead to oil leaks.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 300-10860-5248107). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
