What’s involved: Crankshaft Position (CKP) System Variation Learn (CASE Relearn)
Swapping the physical engine changes the alignment between the crankshaft sensor and the reluctor wheel. A Crankshaft Position Variation Learn must be performed using a bi-directional scan tool (such as GM GDS2, GM MDI, or equivalent). Security functions like the immobilizer may also need to be re-linked.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- AWD PTU Alignment: Take extreme care when aligning and inserting the AWD intermediate shaft into the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) to avoid nicking the shaft seals.
- Torque-to-Yield (TTY) Bolts: The harmonic balancer and flexplate/flywheel bolts are single-use and must be replaced.
- Vacuum Pump Inspection: Inspect the mechanical vacuum pump on the back of the cylinder head before dropping the engine in, as access is extremely limited once installed.
- Clear Codes Before Relearn: Active diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) must be cleared before initiating the Crankshaft Position Variation Learn, or the procedure will fail.
- Turbocharger Transfer: Ensure the oil feed and return lines are clean, properly connected, and primed with oil before starting the engine to prevent turbo failure.
