Know This Engine Before You Buy
The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:
A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:
- Verify the 8th digit of the VIN is G (Raptor) or T (Navigator).
- Verify the vehicle build date on the door jamb sticker is on or before February 25, 2018.
- Physically inspect the oil pan to confirm it is a two-piece design (plastic/composite lower pan mated to an aluminum/steel upper section).
- Confirm the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission.
What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:
Special tools this job needs:
- Steck Ford 3.5L/3.7L EcoBoost Engine Out Lift Plate Hoist Tool (Part #50133)
- Camshaft holding/alignment timing tool kit (OTC 303-1655 / 303-1656)
- Torx Plus TP55 socket
- Inverted Torx sockets (e.g., E7)
- Crankshaft pulley/harmonic balancer puller
- High-pressure fuel line disconnect tools
- Bi-directional diagnostic scan tool (Ford IDS/FDRS or FORScan)
Budget for these consumables at install:
- 6.0 quarts of premium OE-spec 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil
- Motorcraft FL-500S oil filter
- Motorcraft Orange or Yellow pre-diluted engine coolant (WSS-M97B57-A1 or WSS-M97B51-A1)
- Upper and lower intake manifold gaskets
- Valve cover gaskets
- Exhaust manifold gaskets and turbocharger mounting gaskets/hardware
- High-pressure fuel pump O-ring
- One-Time-Use High-Pressure Fuel Line (Ford Part #HL3Z-9J323-C)
- 6 OE-spec spark plugs (gapped to 0.030 inches)
- Motorcraft TA-357 High-Performance Engine RTV Silicone
- Torque-to-yield bolts (crankshaft pulley bolt, cam phaser bolts)
What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:
What’s involved: Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Relearn, Fuel Injector Calibration (IQA Codes), and PATS Parameter Reset
Requires a Parameter Reset to marry the PCM and PATS immobilizer system to prevent a no-start condition. Additionally, CKP sensor relearn and programming of the 30-digit fuel injector calibration codes are required. Sources differ on whether programming is strictly model-dependent or universally required; choosing 'model_dependent' as the more cautious value.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- Turbocharger Oil Feed Line Replacement: Must replace lines and block fittings containing mesh screens to prevent oil starvation and immediate turbo failure.
- High-Pressure Fuel Line Trap: The metal fuel line is single-use only. Reusing it will cause a high-pressure fuel leak and severe fire hazard.
- Two-Piece Oil Pan Inspection: Highly prone to warping and leaking. Resealing requires meticulous cleaning and a 24-hour RTV cure time. Upgrading to a one-piece aluminum pan is highly recommended while the engine is out.
- Pre-Install Cam Phaser Inspection: Inspect and replace worn phasers on the stand to avoid a grueling 10+ hour job inside the vehicle later.
- Cab-Off Installation: Many professional shops lift the vehicle's cab off the frame to access the engine due to tight clearances.
Easy to get right once you know them:
- Reusing the single-use high-pressure fuel line, leading to fuel leaks and engine fires.
- Reusing clogged turbo oil feed lines, causing immediate failure of transferred turbochargers.
- Rushing the RTV cure time on the oil pan, resulting in immediate and persistent oil leaks.
- Ordering this High-Output engine as an upgrade for a standard 3.5L EcoBoost vehicle (VIN 4).
- Skipping the mandatory Crankshaft Position Relearn or PATS programming, resulting in rough running or a no-start condition.
Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every engine of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:
🔎 Recommended at install: Replace all four Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) phasers with updated, redesigned units.
🔎 Recommended at install: Replace the high-pressure fuel pump assembly to prevent fuel/oil leaks and fire hazards.
🔎 Recommended at install: Reseal using Motorcraft TA-357 RTV sealant, or upgrade to the later one-piece aluminum oil pan.
🔎 Recommended at install: Reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and replace both engine valve covers.
🔎 Recommended at install: Replace brake master cylinder to prevent fluid leaks into the brake booster.
🔎 Recommended at install: Perform preventative replacement of the water pump during engine swap.
Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 300-10102B-5524168). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.
Policies, in plain English.
Shipping & Handling
- Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
- Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
- The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
- Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance
120-Day Warranty
This part includes a 120-day warranty.
- If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
- Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
- Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation
Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.
Returns (30 Days)
We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.
- Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
- Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
- Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
- Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
- Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited
Damaged in Shipping?
Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:
- Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
- Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
- Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
- Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery
We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.
Order Cancellation
Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
