Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Verify the three-letter transmission code is QCT on the vehicle's build sticker (spare tire well or service booklet).
  • Confirm the vehicle is equipped with the Quattro (AWD) system.
  • Confirm the engine is a 2.0L Turbocharged 4-cylinder (TFSI).
🔎 Where to look: Check the metal identification plate on the underside of the transmission housing to confirm Audi part number 0BK 300 040 J or ZF model 8HP-55 / spec 1087 032 085.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

6-12shop labor900-1800typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Audi-compatible diagnostic scan tool (VCDS, ODIS, or high-end bidirectional scanner)
  • Triple square (XZN) and Torx bit sockets (M10 and M12 triple squares for driveshaft bolts)
  • Fluid fill pump adapter (specifically for the ZF 8HP fill port)
  • Engine support bar
  • Transmission jack
🔌 Wiring harness: External wiring harnesses are not included. The internal TCM/Mechatronic unit is electronically locked to the donor vehicle's immobilizer system.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • OE-spec ZF Lifeguard 8 fluid (Audi spec G 060 162 A2)
  • Integrated plastic transmission oil pan assembly (includes filter and gasket) and new pan bolts
  • Front pump input shaft seal (torque converter seal)
  • Rear output shaft seals
  • New torque-to-yield bolts for driveshafts, subframe, and transmission mounts
  • Transmission cooler line flush agent

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Security/Immobilizer re-marriage (Component Protection) AND TCM adaptive relearn

Audi's 5th-generation immobilizer (WFS5) locks the internal TCM to the donor vehicle's VIN. This requires a Component Unlock via Audi's live online database (GEKO system) using ODIS. Alternatively, an advanced programmer can clone the flash and EEPROM data from the original TCM to the replacement unit, or the original mechatronic unit can be swapped into the replacement housing. A full TCM adaptive relearn drive cycle must also be performed.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated (clicks three times and sits recessed) before bolting to the engine to prevent cracking the internal oil pump gear.
  • Fluid Fill Temperature & Procedure: Fluid level check is highly temperature-sensitive. Must be checked on a level lift, engine running, with fluid temperature between 35C and 45C.
  • Driveshaft Bolt Torque: Quattro driveshaft bolts are one-time-use stretch bolts and must be replaced.
  • Alignment Dowels: Ensure engine-to-transmission alignment dowels are in place to prevent crooked seating and input shaft bearing destruction.
  • Component Protection: The vehicle will be in limp mode or will not move at all until Component Protection is removed.
  • Torque Converter Bolt Access: Access can be notoriously difficult, sometimes requiring removal of the starter motor.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Expecting 'Plug-and-Play' without programming or clearing the Component Protection lock.
  • Reusing the old plastic oil pan instead of installing a new pan/filter kit.
  • Using cheap generic or universal ATF instead of ZF Lifeguard 8.
  • Mixing up solenoids during a mechatronic swap, which causes severe shift flares.
  • Skipping the transmission cooler line flush, leading to immediate contamination of the replacement unit.
  • Improper fluid level check (checking with the engine off, leading to gross underfilling).

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

moderateTSB 2029305/7: Harsh downshifts while braking or harsh 1-2 upshifts under acceleration2015-2017

🔎 Recommended at install: Resolved via a TCM software update using SVM Action Code 02A048

moderateTSB 2029027: Fluid leaks from transmission oil pan gasket or transfer case seam2015-2017

🔎 Recommended at install: Often originates from the weep hole of the double seal between the transmission and transfer case; replace double seal

severeTSB P074100: Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off2015-2017

🔎 Recommended at install: Resolved via TCM software updates

moderateTorque Converter Clutch (TCC) WearAll

🔎 Recommended at install: Bore wear at the torque converter pressure valve in the valve body causes pressure loss; requires valve body repair

moderateMechatronic Sleeve LeakAll

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace electrical connector sleeve (Mechatronic sleeve) to prevent ATF contamination of electrical pins

moderateNeglected Fluid WearAll

🔎 Recommended at install: Change fluid every 50,000 to 75,000 miles despite Audi's lifetime fill claim to prevent clutch wear debris from clogging solenoids

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-62894-4945188). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
