Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Locate the white paper option code sticker in the spare tire well or maintenance booklet and verify the transmission code is NTA.
  • Confirm the vehicle is a Quattro AWD model by checking for the rear driveshaft and rear differential.
  • Scan Address 02 (Transmission) with an OBD-II tool to confirm the hardware part number starts with 0BK.
🔎 Where to look: The transmission identification tag is a metal plate stamped on the underside of the transmission case near the oil pan, displaying the ZF model number (starting with 1087) and the 3-letter code (NTA).

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

7 to 14 hoursshop labor$1,200 - $2,800typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Triple Square (XZN) spline sockets (M10, M12)
  • Torx sockets (T40, T60)
  • Transmission fluid filling pump with dedicated hook adapter (VAS 6617 or equivalent)
  • Advanced diagnostic scan tool (VCDS, ODIS, or OBDeleven)
  • Engine support brace or transmission jack
  • Torque wrench
🔌 Wiring harness: The TCM is integrated into the internal mechatronics unit and is VIN-locked via Audi's Component Protection system.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Main Transmission Fluid (ATF): ZF LifeguardFluid 8 (Audi Spec G 060 162 A2) - approx. 8.6 to 9.0 Liters
  • Front Differential Fluid: G 052 145 S2 gear oil - 1.0 Liter
  • Transfer Case / Center Differential Fluid: G 055 145 A2 gear oil - 1.0 Liter
  • Transmission Filter & Pan Gasket Kit (Audi Part # 0BK398009A)
  • One-time-use aluminum pan bolts and subframe/mount stretch bolts
  • Torque converter input shaft seal (ZF Part # 0734319811) and axle seals
  • Professional transmission cooler line flush

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Component Protection removal and TCM adaptive values relearn

The replacement TCM will trigger Component Protection (fault code P170100) and enter safe mode. This requires an Audi dealer or specialist with online ODIS access to adapt the replacement TCM to the vehicle's immobilizer. Alternatively, a specialized tuner can clone the EEPROM/flash memory from the original TCM. A TCM adaptive values relearn must also be performed post-install.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Three separate fluid chambers (main ATF, front differential, and transfer case) must be filled independently. Running the differentials dry will destroy the unit.
  • Torque converter must be fully seated (multiple distinct drops/clicks) before bolting to the engine to avoid cracking the internal oil pump.
  • Fluid level check must be performed with the vehicle level, engine running, and fluid temperature strictly between 35°C and 45°C (or 30°C and 50°C) using a scan tool.
  • Many subframe, mount, and axle flange bolts are single-use torque-to-yield fasteners and must be replaced.
  • Torque converter bolts may require removing the starter motor for access on some platform variations.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Ordering for a Front-Wheel-Drive (FWD) vehicle instead of a Quattro (AWD) model.
  • Ignoring the 3-letter transmission code (NTA) and assuming any Audi 8-speed automatic will work.
  • Failing to fill the separate front differential and transfer case chambers with gear oil.
  • Using generic multi-vehicle ATF instead of ZF LifeguardFluid 8.
  • Skipping the professional transmission cooler line flush, leading to immediate contamination from the old unit.
  • Forcing the bellhousing bolts together when the torque converter is not fully seated, cracking the oil pump.
  • Skipping the Component Protection removal or the TCM adaptation reset.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect and replace the transmission oil pan gasket, transfer case seam seals, or the double-seal weep hole between the transmission and center differential.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-62310-2512042). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
