Know This Transmission Before You Buy
The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:
A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:
- Locate the paper vehicle data sticker in the spare tire well or maintenance booklet and confirm the transmission code is LML.
- Verify the underside ID plate on the transmission casing reads LML.
- Confirm the vehicle is a Quattro (AWD) model, not Front-Wheel Drive (FWD).
What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:
Special tools this job needs:
- Heavy-duty transmission jack
- Engine support bar/bridge
- Triple-square (XZN) and Torx socket sets (T27, T40)
- Fluid transfer pump with dedicated Audi/ZF filler adapter (VAS 6262/2 or equivalent)
- Diagnostic scan tool (VCDS, OBD11, or ODIS)
Budget for these consumables at install:
- ZF Lifeguard 8 (Audi Spec G 060 162 A2) or ZF Lifeguard 6 (Audi Spec G 055 005 A2) - sources differ on exact fluid spec, confirm with us before install
- Transmission filter (Audi part 0B6 325 429) and metal-elastomer pan gasket (Audi part 09E 321 371 A) or integrated plastic pan/filter kit
- Mechatronic Sealing Sleeve (Connector Sleeve)
- Mechatronic Bridge Seal and Adapters (four small tube seals and one rectangular seal)
- Torque Converter Seal (Front Pump Seal - ZF part 0501 320 478 or Audi equivalent)
- New subframe and transmission mount stretch bolts (torque-to-yield)
- High-quality transmission cooler line flush
- Audi axle oil (G 055 145 A2) for front/center differential
What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:
What’s involved: Security/Immobilizer Re-marriage (Audi Component Protection) AND TCM Adaptive Relearn
The TCM inside the mechatronic unit is part of Audi's Component Protection system. Installing this used transmission will trigger limp-home mode (locked in 3rd gear). To unlock, a shop must connect the vehicle to Audi's live online servers using ODIS factory diagnostic software. Alternatively, the original mechatronic unit can be swapped into the replacement transmission to bypass Component Protection, though a TCM adaptive relearn is still required.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated onto the input shaft and fluid pump (three distinct 'drops' or 'clicks'). Tightening the bellhousing bolts with an unseated converter will crack the internal fluid pump.
- Subframe X-Brace Bolts: The structural aluminum X-brace uses torque-to-yield (stretch) bolts which must not be reused.
- Strict Fluid Fill Procedure: No dipstick. Fluid must be pumped in through the fill plug on the bottom of the case. The final fluid level check must be performed with the engine running, transmission in Park, and fluid temperature strictly between 35°C and 45°C (or 30°C and 40°C depending on source).
- Mechatronic ESD Warning: Wear an anti-static wrist strap if transferring the original mechatronic unit to avoid frying the TCM.
- Component Protection Lockout: The vehicle will be locked in 3rd gear (limp mode) immediately after installation until Component Protection is removed via ODIS.
Easy to get right once you know them:
- Ordering for an Audi A4 or Q5 assuming compatibility based on engine size.
- Assuming the transmission is defective when it enters limp mode due to Component Protection.
- Using the wrong fluid (e.g., generic multi-vehicle ATF or mixing Lifeguard 6 and Lifeguard 8 without verification).
- Checking the fluid level with the engine off, which causes severe underfilling.
- Failing to flush the transmission cooler, leading to immediate contamination of the replacement unit.
- Reusing old mechatronic connector sleeves and bridge seals.
Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:
🔎 Recommended at install: Update Transmission Control Unit (TCU) software to the latest version via Audi's Software Version Management (SVM) and reset adaptation values.
🔎 Recommended at install: Typically caused by faulty microswitches or a failing selector lever lock solenoid (N110) in the shifter console assembly, rather than an internal transmission failure.
🔎 Recommended at install: Premature wear or glazing of the torque converter lock-up clutch causes shuddering/vibration and minor RPM fluctuations. Requires torque converter replacement and fluid flush to prevent internal contamination.
🔎 Recommended at install: Replace the plastic electrical connector sleeve (mechatronic sleeve), rubber bridge seal, and four round sealing sleeves between the mechatronic unit and the transmission case.
🔎 Recommended at install: TCM software update.
🔎 Recommended at install: Addresses droning or scraping noises from the front of the vehicle on acceleration, related to a bearing in the gearbox housing.
Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-51501-3316174). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.
Policies, in plain English.
Shipping & Handling
- Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
- Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
- The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
- Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance
120-Day Warranty
This part includes a 120-day warranty.
- If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
- Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
- Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation
Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.
Returns (30 Days)
We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.
- Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
- Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
- Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
- Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
- Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited
Damaged in Shipping?
Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:
- Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
- Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
- Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
- Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery
We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.
Order Cancellation
Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
