Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Confirm the 8th digit of the vehicle's VIN is 'G' (3.6L Pentastar V6 engine).
  • Confirm the vehicle is Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD); this unit will not fit AWD models.
  • Verify the transmission sales code on the door jamb body code plate or build sheet is DFL or DFG.
🔎 Where to look: Look at the driver's side rear bottom of the transmission case to verify the stamped model number reads 845RE or 8HP45.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

5-9shop labor700-1500typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvancedDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Professional scan tool with real-time transmission fluid temperature reading and Quick Learn capability
  • Fluid fill pump
  • Low-range torque wrench (for 10 Nm / 89 in-lbs)
  • Pass-thru electrical connector release tool (Mopar P/N 10377A)
  • Transmission jack
  • Engine support bar
🔌 Wiring harness: The electrical connector on the case is fragile and notorious for breaking if pried with pliers. Use extreme care or the proper release tool.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Mopar 8 & 9 Speed ATF (P/N 68218925AA) or ZF Lifeguard 8 fluid (Do NOT use ATF+4)
  • 9.0 to 9.7 quarts of fluid (for complete dry system fill)
  • New plastic oil pan assembly with integrated filter, gasket, and new drain/fill plugs
  • Torque converter seal (front pump/input shaft seal)
  • Axle seals
  • Professional transmission cooler line flush solvent

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: VIN-specific programming alignment (EGS/immobilizer marriage) and TCM adaptive relearn (Quick Learn).

The TCM is integrated into the internal mechatronics unit and is locked to the original vehicle's VIN security system. If using the replacement TCM, a dealer-level scan tool (like wiTECH) must be used to align the VIN to prevent the vehicle from entering limp mode or refusing to shift out of Park. If reusing your original TCM/valve body, VIN programming is not required, but a scan-tool-based Quick Learn adaptive relearn is still mandatory.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: The torque converter must be fully seated onto the input shaft and pump gears (clicking/dropping back three distinct times) before bolting the transmission to the engine. Failure to do so will crack the front oil pump upon mating.
  • Fluid Fill Temperature Window: Fluid level must be checked and finalized via the side fill plug while the engine is idling in Park and the fluid temperature is strictly between 30°C and 50°C (86°F to 122°F).
  • Cooler Thermostat: Some vehicles have a transmission cooler thermostat opening at higher temperatures (e.g., 75°C). The engine must run long enough to open the thermostat and fill the cooler before the final level check.
  • Pan Torque Sequence: Plastic pan bolts must be torqued to exactly 10 Nm (89 in-lbs) in a crisscross pattern starting from the center to prevent warping and leaks.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Using ATF+4 instead of ZF Lifeguard 8 or Mopar 8/9-speed fluid, which causes severe clutch slippage and ruins the unit.
  • Checking the fluid level with the engine off, which leads to severe underfilling.
  • Skipping the mandatory VIN programming/alignment step, leaving the vehicle stuck in Park or limp mode.
  • Reusing the old plastic pan and integrated filter from the donor unit instead of installing a brand-new kit.
  • Failing to flush the transmission cooler lines, causing old metallic debris to contaminate and destroy the replacement unit.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-05334-4920441). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
