Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Confirm AWD drivetrain by verifying the presence of a center driveshaft and rear differential.
  • Check the silver Service Parts Identification sticker (glove box or spare tire well) for RPO code MHB.
  • Verify the engine is the 1.4L turbocharged engine (8th digit of VIN is typically B).
🔎 Where to look: Look for the 13-digit or 16-digit alphanumeric code stamped into the transmission case on the top of the housing near the manual shift shaft, or printed on a barcode label on the rear cover.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

7.0 - 11.0shop labor800 - 1,800typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Engine support fixture
  • Transmission jack
  • Subframe alignment pins/tools
  • GM-compatible J2534 pass-thru programming tool or GM-specific scan tool (Tech 2 / MDI with GDS2)
🔌 Wiring harness: AWD configuration requires dropping the front subframe, supporting the engine, and removing the Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Ensure alignment dowel pins are present and clean on the engine block.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • GM Dexron VI Synthetic ATF (8.5 to 9.0 quarts for dry fill/overhaul)
  • Internal transmission filter (if splitting case/servicing during swap)
  • Torque converter hub seal (front pump seal)
  • Left and right axle shaft seals
  • Power Transfer Unit (PTU) input shaft seal and O-ring
  • Professional transmission cooler-line flush solvent

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

What’s involved: VIN-specific programming and TCM adaptive values relearn (Fast Learn)

The integrated TEHCM is VIN-locked to the donor vehicle. It must be programmed with the vehicle's exact VIN using GM's Service Programming System (SPS2) via a J2534 pass-thru device, followed by a mandatory 'Fast Learn' adaptive relearn procedure. Alternatively, the original functioning TEHCM can be physically swapped into the replacement unit, which bypasses VIN programming but still requires the adaptive fast learn.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Must be fully seated into the pump gears (feeling/hearing 3 distinct clicks/drops). If not fully recessed, bolting the transmission to the engine will instantly crack the internal oil pump gear.
  • PTU Alignment: Clean, inspect, and lubricate the intermediate shaft splines with high-pressure grease before mating the PTU to prevent spline wear or seal leaks.
  • Fluid Level Check Procedure: No dipstick. Must check with vehicle level, engine running in Park, fluid temp between 185F and 203F, by removing the 11mm check plug on the driver's side of the case.
  • The Tubes 9 and 10 Trap: If swapping the original TEHCM, ensure the two small rubber fluid passage tubes do not fall out or misalign, or the vehicle will have no forward movement.
  • Cooler Line Flush: A professional flush is mandatory to prevent debris from the failed unit from immediately contaminating and destroying the replacement unit's sensitive solenoids.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Ordering a FWD transmission (RPO MH8) for an AWD vehicle (RPO MHB).
  • Skipping the mandatory cooler-line flush, leading to immediate debris contamination.
  • Failing to perform the TEHCM VIN programming or the adaptive fast learn, leaving the vehicle in limp mode.
  • Checking the fluid level with the engine off, which causes severe underfilling and immediate clutch destruction.
  • Improperly seating the torque converter and forcing the bellhousing bolts, which breaks the front pump.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

minorElectronic Park Lock Lever Recall (NHTSA 16V502000)2015-2016

🔎 Recommended at install: Ensure vehicle-level shifter recall has been completed so key cannot be removed when not in Park.

severeCoolant Contamination (TSB 08-07-30-035I)All

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace the radiator/cooler assembly before installing the replacement transmission if original failed due to coolant contamination.

severePressure Regulator Valve & Pump Wear2015+

🔎 Recommended at install: Monitor for slipping in forward/reverse. Wear on the pressure regulator valve bore causes low line pressure and burned clutch packs.

moderateTorque Converter ShudderAll

🔎 Recommended at install: Perform regular fluid maintenance and use correct GM Dexron VI fluid spec.

moderateSurging, Hesitation, or Rolling on Inclines2015

🔎 Recommended at install: Can be related to transmission control software, internal valve body wear, or the 'Neutral Idle' feature.

minorFluid Seepage vs Leak (TSB 150089004C)All

🔎 Recommended at install: Use TSB guidelines to differentiate between normal minor fluid seepage and a true leak requiring repair.

minorInability to Shift into 6th GearAll

🔎 Recommended at install: Often traced to old, degraded fluid or a software issue.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-05139-2122839). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
