Know This Engine Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:

  • Verify the 8th digit of the VIN is '6'.
  • Confirm the vehicle is a 2023-2024 Ford Bronco Sport (not a Ford Escape or other model year).
  • Confirm availability of working fuel injectors and a working turbocharger to transfer from the old engine.
🔎 Where to look: Check the 8th digit of your vehicle's VIN; it must be '6'.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

12 to 20 hoursshop labor$1,800 to $3,500typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced to ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Professional-grade diagnostic scan tool (Ford IDS/FDRS or FORScan)
  • Engine hoist and load leveler
  • AWD drivetrain tools
  • Precision torque wrench
🔌 Wiring harness: The engine harness must match the 2023–2024 Bronco Sport 1.5L. If your vehicle has different options, transfer your original engine wiring harness to the replacement engine.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Motorcraft SAE 5W-20 (or 0W-20) engine oil meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C960-A1
  • Motorcraft FL-910S oil filter
  • Motorcraft Yellow Concentrated Antifreeze/Coolant (Ford Spec WSS-M97B57-A1 / VC-13-G)
  • Intake manifold gasket
  • Exhaust manifold gasket
  • Thermostat housing gasket
  • Fuel injector Teflon seals and rubber O-rings
  • High-pressure fuel pump O-ring
  • Front and rear crankshaft seals
  • 3 new Motorcraft CYFS-12Y-T6 (or SP-597-X) spark plugs
  • New torque-to-yield (TTY) bolts (crankshaft pulley bolt, flywheel/flexplate bolts, motor mount bolts)
  • Accessory drive belts & tensioner

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Relearn, Fuel Injector Flow Calibration (IQA Coding), and PCM Calibration Update

A dealer-level scan tool (Ford IDS/FDRS) or highly capable aftermarket tool is required to perform the CKP relearn, program injector IQA codes, and update the PCM software to the latest safety calibration.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Fuel Injector Cylinder Matching: Keep track of which injector came from which cylinder and reinstall them in the exact same cylinder to avoid having to reprogram the IQA codes.
  • Wet Oil Pump Belt: The engine uses a wet belt to drive the oil pump. Inspect this belt while the engine is out and replace if degraded. Always use the exact Ford-specified oil to prevent belt degradation.
  • AWD Transfer Case / PTU Alignment: Carefully align and torque the Power Take-off Unit (PTU) to prevent severe driveline vibration or spline damage.
  • Torque-to-Yield (TTY) Bolts: Critical fasteners like the crankshaft pulley bolt and flexplate bolts must be replaced to prevent slippage or loosening.
  • Water Pump & Coolant Contamination: Thoroughly flush the entire cooling system to remove contamination before filling with fresh Motorcraft Yellow coolant.
  • Ground Connections: Ensure all engine and chassis grounds are clean and tight to prevent strange electrical issues.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Ordering for a 2021-2022 or 2025+ Bronco Sport, or a Ford Escape, which have different wiring, tubing, mounting layouts, and engine revisions.
  • Reusing old fuel injector Teflon seals and rubber O-rings when transferring injectors, which can cause high-pressure fuel leaks and engine fires.
  • Using non-spec engine oil, which degrades the wet oil pump belt and clogs the oil pickup screen.
  • Skipping the Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Relearn, leading to P0315 codes and false misfire detections.
  • Forgetting to top off or replace the PTU / transfer case fluid that leaks out during engine removal.
  • Ignoring the fuel injector recall (NHTSA 24V-187) during installation.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every engine of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 300-10972-5421516). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
