A professional bi-directional scan tool is required to reset the VVT learned values and to perform the crankshaft position sensor relearn. Basic idle relearn can sometimes be done without it, but full calibration requires a dealer-level tool.
Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:
- Torque Converter Seating (CRITICAL): The torque converter must be fully seated into the transmission pump. If it slips forward during engine removal and is not pushed back and spun until it clicks into all three stages of engagement, bolting the engine to the transmission will crush the transmission oil pump, instantly destroying your CVT.
- Thermo Control Valve (TCV) Inspection: The TCV is located under the intake manifold. Since the intake manifold is easily accessible while the engine is out of the vehicle, you must inspect the TCV on the donor engine. If it has the older black plastic shaft, replace it with the updated stainless steel shaft version (Part #21319AA012) now.
- Cam Carrier and Valve Cover Sealing: The FB25D uses liquid gasket (RTV) for the cam carriers and valve covers. Ensure all mating surfaces are surgically clean and dry before applying ThreeBond. Any oil residue will cause a leak, requiring engine removal to fix.
