Know This Engine Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:

  • Confirm that the 8th digit of the vehicle's VIN is 'P'.
  • Confirm the vehicle is a 4x4 Bronco and that front axle/transfer case mounting points match.
  • Locate the barcode label on the original engine (timing cover or valve cover) and verify the part number prefix (e.g., MB3E or PB2E).
  • Check the full VIN on the NHTSA website or with a dealer for open recall 24V-635 / 24S55.
🔎 Where to look: Check the 8th digit of the VIN for 'P' and verify the engine label prefix (MB3E or PB2E) on the front timing cover or driver-side valve cover.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

15-20shop labor2250-4000typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Fuel Injector Puller (OTC 6999 or Ford 310-206)
  • Camshaft Alignment/Timing Tool Kit (OTC 6680 / 303-1248)
  • Quick-Disconnect Tools
  • Front crank seal installer
  • Harmonic balancer installer
  • Engine hoist and stand
  • External Torx (E-Torx) sockets
🔌 Wiring harness: You must reuse and transfer your vehicle's original engine wiring harness to ensure compatibility with your vehicle's specific options and module locations.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Engine Oil (6.0 quarts of SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Blend meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C961-A1 or WSS-M2C946-B1)
  • Oil Filter (Motorcraft FL-2062-A or cartridge equivalent)
  • Engine Coolant (Approximately 12.4 quarts of Motorcraft Yellow Prediluted Antifreeze/Coolant meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B57-A2)
  • Spark Plugs (Motorcraft SP-594 or equivalent, pre-gapped to 0.028-0.032 inches)
  • Intake manifold gaskets (upper and lower)
  • Turbocharger mounting gaskets, oil feed/drain gaskets, and coolant line O-rings
  • High-pressure fuel pump O-ring and high-pressure fuel crossover tubes (one-time-use)
  • Front and rear crankshaft seals
  • Crankshaft pulley bolt / harmonic balancer bolt (FT4Z-6A340-A, torque-to-yield)
  • Yellow plastic quarter-turn oil drain plug

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Relearn, Fuel Injector Flow Coding (IQA), and PCM/BCM Security Synchronization

Requires a dealer-level scan tool (such as Ford's FDRS or FORScan with compatible OBD2 adapter) to perform Crankshaft Position Sensor Relearn (Neutral Profile Correction) to prevent P0315 codes, Fuel Injector Flow Coding if using replacement injectors, and a PCM replacement procedure to marry the PCM to the BCM/PATS immobilizer system to prevent a no-start condition.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • The 'Wet' Oil Pump Belt: Runs directly inside the engine oil and is highly susceptible to degradation if incorrect oil spec is used or oil changes are neglected.
  • One-Time-Use High-Pressure Fuel Lines: Metal lines are torque-to-yield and must be replaced once loosened to prevent severe fire hazards.
  • Plastic Oil Pan Fragility: Easily cracked or warped. Must use a brand-new pan if removed and follow Ford's exact multi-stage torque sequence.
  • Turbo Oil Feed Line Filters: Must clean or replace small inline filters/screens in the turbo oil feed lines to prevent starving and destroying the turbochargers.
  • Turbocharger Transfer: Since turbos are not included, you must transfer your old ones and replace all associated lines, gaskets, and O-rings, and prime the oil system before first start.
  • Mandatory ECU/PCM Programming: The vehicle will not start due to the PATS immobilizer until programmed using Ford's FDRS tool.
  • Accessory Mounting: Ensure all brackets and accessories from the original Bronco engine are used, as alternator mounting differs from other models like the F-150.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Reusing Torque-to-Yield (TTY) Fasteners: Reusing the crankshaft pulley bolt, flywheel/flexplate bolts, or high-pressure fuel lines leads to failures or leaks.
  • Using the Wrong Oil Specification: Using oil that does not meet Ford's exact specification can cause the wet oil pump belt to break down, leading to total engine destruction.
  • Failing to Perform the Crank Relearn: Leads to rough idle or persistent check engine lights (P0315/P0300).
  • Not Replacing the Turbo Oil Feed Lines: Reusing old, carbon-clogged lines leads to immediate turbocharger failure.
  • Not Investigating the Valve Recall: Buyers should check if their vehicle is covered under NHTSA recall 24V-635 before buying, as Ford may replace the engine for free.
  • Not Realizing Turbos are Missing: Purchasing without understanding that 'LESS TURBOS' means they must provide and transfer their own turbochargers.
  • Failing to Program the ECU: Assuming the engine is plug-and-play and failing to plan for programming, resulting in a no-start condition.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
