Know This Engine Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this engine family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right engine shows up:

  • Verify the 6th digit of the VIN: 1 for FWD, 2 for AWD.
  • Verify the engine code stamped on the front of the block reads L15BE or L15B7.
  • Confirm that the original turbocharger is in good working order to transfer over, as this unit is sold LESS TURBO.
🔎 Where to look: The 6th digit of the VIN indicates drivetrain configuration, and the engine code is stamped on the front of the aluminum block near the transmission bellhousing.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

10 to 15 hoursshop labor$1,500 to $3,000typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced to ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Crankshaft pulley holder tool (Honda OEM 07MAB-PY3010A)
  • Bi-directional OBD2 scan tool (Honda i-HDS, Autel, or Foxwell NT510 Elite)
  • Fuel injector puller/seal installer tool
  • Calibrated torque wrench for angle-torque measurements
  • Engine hoist and stand
  • Fuel line disconnect tools
🔌 Wiring harness: You must reuse your original engine wiring harness to ensure 100% electrical compatibility and prevent communication errors.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Engine Oil (0W-20 Full Synthetic)
  • Oil Filter (Genuine Honda Part # 15400-PLM-A02)
  • Engine Coolant (Honda Type 2 Blue Long Life Coolant)
  • Spark Plugs (NGK Laser Iridium Part # DILKAR8P8SY)
  • Intake manifold gasket
  • Exhaust manifold gasket
  • Turbocharger mounting gaskets and sealing washers
  • Thermostat gasket
  • Rear main seal
  • Valve cover gasket
  • Direct injector seals (single-use)

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed✅ NoECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Pattern Relearn, Idle Relearn, and Immobilizer Re-marriage

Sources differ on programming scope: Arm 1 highlights CKP and Idle Relearn, while Arm 2 highlights Immobilizer Re-marriage. Both agree a dealer-level scan tool (Honda i-HDS/HDS) or high-end professional tool is required.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • FWD vs. AWD Oil Pan & Bracket Transfer: AWD setups require transferring the oil pan, engine mount brackets, and intermediate shaft brackets for transfer case clearance.
  • Direct Injector Coding: If using replacement injectors, program their unique calibration codes into the ECU. Alternatively, transfer original injectors.
  • Turbocharger Coolant Line Flush: Thoroughly flush all coolant and oil feed lines when transferring the turbo to prevent bearing failure.
  • Torque-to-Yield (TTY) Bolts: Cylinder head bolts cannot be reused and must follow a specific angle-torque procedure.
  • Turbo Oil Feed Line: Inspect or replace the line as it is prone to clogging with sludge.
  • Grounding Locations: Pay meticulous attention to all engine and transmission grounding points to avoid electrical issues.
  • Fragile Plastic Components: Handle brittle plastic intake manifolds and sensor connectors with care.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Ordering for a Civic or Accord assuming all Honda 1.5T engines are identical.
  • Skipping the CKP Relearn, leading to immediate misfire codes (P0300) or limp mode.
  • Reusing worn spark plugs instead of installing brand-new NGK Laser Iridium plugs.
  • Neglecting the PCM software update for oil dilution (TSB 18-114 / 18-124) on 2017–2018 models.
  • Reusing the turbocharger without inspecting it for shaft play or contamination from a previous engine failure.
  • Incorrect ECU/Immobilizer programming causing a no-start condition.
  • Misdiagnosing the original failure and installing the replacement engine without fixing root causes like cooling system issues.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every engine of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 300-10152-5588035). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
