Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Verify the transmission part number starts with A2122708508 (or matches ID 2122708508).
  • Confirm the vehicle is All-Wheel Drive (4MATIC).
  • Confirm the vehicle has the 3.0L V6 Biturbo (M276) engine.
  • Confirm the installer has the capability to either swap the original conductor plate or clone the FBS4 security data.
🔎 Where to look: The transmission serial number and part number are stamped on the left side of the transmission housing, on the flat edge just above the oil pan rail.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

8-12shop labor1200-2000typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Mercedes-specific diagnostic scan tool (Xentry/DAS, Autel MaxiSys, or iSCAN NX)
  • 722.9 transmission fluid fill adapter (e.g., Assenmacher ATF129)
  • Pressurized fluid pump
  • Precise torque wrench for aluminum stretch bolts
  • Engine support bar
  • Transmission jack
  • Infrared thermometer
🔌 Wiring harness: External wiring harness is not included. Internal TCM is locked to the donor vehicle's FBS4 security system.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Mercedes-Benz MB 236.15 specification fluid (Blue fluid, e.g., Genuine Mercedes-Benz ATF 134 FE or Shell ATF 134 FE)
  • Transmission filter and pan gasket kit
  • 6 new aluminum pan bolts (one-time-use stretch bolts)
  • Torque converter seal (primary pump radial shaft seal)
  • Transmission cooler-line flush solvent

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed⚠️ YesECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: Security/Immobilizer re-marriage (Drive Authorization System / FBS4), SCN coding, and TCM adaptive relearn.

The TCM is an FBS4 theft-relevant part locked to the donor VIN. It must be electronically virginized and SCN coded using an online Mercedes-Benz Xentry tool, or cloned by a specialist using advanced tools (e.g., Abrites AVDI). Alternatively, the original functional conductor plate/TCM can be swapped into the replacement transmission to bypass programming.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Must click/clunk three times when rotating and pushing onto the input shaft. Failure to fully seat will crush and destroy the internal primary oil pump upon bolting to the engine.
  • Fluid Fill and Level Procedure: No dipstick. Must be filled from the bottom drain plug. Fluid level must be set with the engine running and fluid temperature at exactly 45C (113F) using the overflow method.
  • Transfer Case Fluid Priming: The integrated transfer case shares fluid with the main cavity but fills via the cooler return line. Idle the engine for several minutes to fully circulate fluid before putting under load.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Using the wrong ATF: Putting older red MB 236.14 fluid or generic multi-vehicle ATF instead of the required blue MB 236.15 fluid, causing immediate clutch slippage.
  • The FBS4 Programming Trap: Assuming a standard shop can program the used unit without realizing it requires specialized FBS4 cloning or swapping the original conductor plate.
  • Crushing the Oil Pump: Failing to fully seat the torque converter before tightening the bellhousing bolts.
  • Reusing the Old Torque Converter: Reusing a contaminated converter or failing to flush cooler lines, washing metal shavings into the replacement unit.
  • Reusing Pan Bolts: Reusing the single-use aluminum pan bolts, leading to improper sealing and leaks.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeConductor Plate & Speed Sensor Failure722.9 family

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace the internal conductor plate or speed sensors. Triggers codes P0717, P0718, P0721, P0722, or P2767 and forces limp home mode.

moderateTorque Converter Shudder / Harsh Shifting722.9 family

🔎 Recommended at install: Software update and torque converter lockup clutch adaptation using a factory-level scan tool, or torque converter replacement.

minorMinor Fluid Seepage722.9 family

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace seals at transmission cooler line connections, oil pan gasket, or torque converter housing joint during installation.

moderateValve Body/Solenoid O-Ring Degradation722.9 family

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace solenoid O-rings to prevent hydraulic pressure leaks, burnt clutches, and poor shift quality.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-62961-5109030). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
