Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Confirm the vehicle is 4x2 (two-wheel drive) and does not have a transfer case or front driveshaft.
  • Verify the 4th digit of the VIN is 'A' (Frontier) and the engine is the 4.0L V6 (VQ40DE).
  • Check the radiator for signs of SMOD (pink milkshake fluid).
🔎 Where to look: Locate the metal identification tag on the passenger side (right rear) of the original transmission case, just above the oil pan rail, and confirm the stamped code ends in 3GX1A or 61X4A.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

5-9shop labor750-1500typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced / ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Heavy-duty transmission jack
  • Torque wrench
  • Fluid pump and fill adapter / charge pipe tool
  • Scan tool capable of reading real-time transmission fluid temperature and performing adaptive relearns
🔌 Wiring harness: The TCM is integrated into the valve body inside the transmission pan. Swapping a unit from a different model will cause CAN communication failures (such as code U1000) and shifting issues.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Nissan Matic-S ATF (approx. 10.9 to 12 quarts for full dry fill)
  • Transmission Filter Kit (internal filter/strainer and new pan gasket)
  • Torque Converter / Front Pump Seal
  • Transmission Cooler Flush aerosol

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Model-dependentprogramming / calibration✅ Nodealer tool needed✅ NoECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: TCM Adaptive Relearn / VIN-Specific Programming

The TCM is integrated with the valve body and contains adaptive shift strategies. A TCM adaptive relearn procedure must be performed using a compatible professional-grade scan tool (like Nissan's CONSULT tool) to ensure smooth shifting. Alternatively, the original working valve body and TCM assembly can be swapped into the replacement transmission to avoid programming.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated (2-3 distinct clicks/drops) before bolting to the engine. Failure to do so will crack the front pump gear, instantly ruining the transmission.
  • Radiator Replacement / Bypass: If the original transmission failed due to SMOD, the radiator must be replaced. Simply flushing it is not enough.
  • Bellhousing Dowel Pins: Ensure alignment dowel pins are in the engine block and not stuck in the old transmission to prevent misalignment and rapid wear.
  • Fluid Level Check Procedure: This transmission does not have a traditional dipstick on some models. It must be filled from a port on the bottom of the pan and checked with the engine running and fluid temperature between 104°F and 176°F.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Reusing a contaminated radiator after an SMOD failure, which immediately destroys the replacement transmission.
  • Ordering a transmission from a 4x4 Frontier, Titan, Pathfinder, Armada, or Xterra assuming they are all the same RE5R05A.
  • Using generic multi-vehicle ATF instead of genuine Nissan Matic-S, causing torque converter shudder and harsh shifting.
  • Improper torque converter installation leading to a cracked front pump on startup.
  • Skipping the cooler line flush, allowing old debris to contaminate the new valve body.
  • Using standard red shop rags that leave tiny cotton fibers ('Red Death') which clog the solenoids and valve body passages.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeSMOD (Strawberry Milkshake of Death)Primarily 2005-2010 (rare on 2014-2019 but still a risk if replacing a unit that failed due to SMOD)

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace the radiator and thoroughly flush the cooler lines before installing the replacement transmission.

severeTCM Solenoid Circuit Failures (Codes P1757 / P1759)RE5R05A family

🔎 Recommended at install: Repair or replace the internal conductor/lead frame of the TCM or repair broken connection pins where the solenoid attaches to the TCM board.

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace torque converter or ensure proper fluid maintenance.

🔎 Recommended at install: Replace failed O-ring on the EVAP vent control valve (not a transmission issue but causes Check Engine Light).

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-62636-4952392). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
