Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Confirm that your truck is a 4x4 (4WD) model.
  • Confirm your vehicle is equipped with the 4.0L V6 engine (engine code VQ40DE).
  • Locate the safety certification label on your driver-side door jamb and verify that the transmission code under the 'Trans/Axle' section reads RE5R05A.
🔎 Where to look: Locate the metal ID tag on the passenger side of the transmission case just above the oil pan rail, or near the rear where the transfer case bolts up.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

7-14shop labor840-2100typical shop bill, on top of the partAdvanced to ExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Heavy-duty transmission jack
  • Extra-long socket extensions and swivel joints
  • Professional OBD-II scan tool capable of resetting Nissan TCM adaptive learning values
  • Torque wrench
  • Line wrenches
🔌 Wiring harness: Look at the electrical connector on your current transmission. It must be the late-style single large harness plug (which connects to the internal TCM), not the early-style three-plug system.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Genuine Nissan Matic-S ATF (Matic-J is an acceptable substitute if Matic-S is unavailable; do not use generic multi-vehicle fluids)
  • Approximately 10.9 quarts (10.3 liters) of ATF for a dry fill
  • New transmission filter and oil pan gasket
  • New torque converter front pump seal (input shaft seal)
  • New rear output shaft seal
  • High-quality transmission cooler line flush solvent

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

✅ Not requiredprogramming / calibration✅ Nodealer tool needed✅ NoECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: TCM Adaptive Relearn

A used OEM transmission from a compatible model year is plug-and-play and does not require dealer VIN programming or security re-marriage to start and run. However, a TCM Adaptive Relearn is highly recommended using a professional scan tool to clear the TCM's adaptive memory and prevent harsh shifts or gear flares.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated onto the transmission input shaft and pump gears (must click/clunk into place 3 distinct times) before bolting to the engine. Failure to do so will crush the front fluid pump upon startup.
  • Crankshaft Position Sensor (POS): You must physically remove the crankshaft position sensor from the top of the bellhousing before removing your old transmission or installing this replacement to prevent snapping it off.
  • Dowel Pin Alignment: Check that the engine block alignment dowel pins are present and not stuck in your old transmission bellhousing. Missing or double-stacked dowel pins cause severe shaft misalignment.
  • Cooler Line Flush: Thoroughly flush your vehicle's transmission cooler lines and external cooler to prevent leftover metal shavings or debris from washing into the replacement unit.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Reusing a Contaminated Radiator: Reusing a radiator that has an active internal coolant leak (SMOD) will immediately flood the replacement transmission with water and coolant, voiding the warranty.
  • Using the Wrong Fluid: Attempting to save money by using generic 'multi-vehicle' ATF or older Matic-D fluid, which leads to immediate torque converter shudder and harsh shifting.
  • Forgetting the Crankshaft Sensor: Forgetting to remove the crankshaft position sensor during the swap, resulting in a broken sensor and a 'no-start' condition.
  • Mismatched Gear Ratios: Attempting to install a transmission from a V8 Titan or Armada onto a V6 truck. While both are RE5R05A transmissions, they differ in bellhousing, input shaft, and internal gear ratios.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeSMOD (Strawberry Milkshake of Death) - Glycol ContaminationRE5R05A family (primarily 2005-2010; 2013+ models have updated radiators but risk remains if replacing a unit that failed from SMOD)

🔎 Recommended at install: If your original transmission failed due to SMOD, you must replace your radiator and flush the cooler lines before installing this replacement.

🔎 Recommended at install: Inspect connector pins and, if necessary, replace the internal valve body/TCM assembly. Addresses DTCs P1754, P1759, P1764, P1769, and P1774.

🔎 Recommended at install: Clean and lubricate the axle shafts and replace the axle lock nuts (not a transmission internal issue).

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-62357-4824895). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
