Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Confirm the 8th digit of your VIN is 'G' or '3' to verify a standard 3.6L non-hybrid gasoline engine.
  • Verify your vehicle is All-Wheel Drive (AWD) by checking for a rear driveshaft and rear differential.
  • Locate the metal ID tag on the side of your original transmission case to verify the model is 948TE / ZF 9HP48.
🔎 Where to look: The transmission identification tag is located on the top/side of the transmission case, typically under the shifter cable bracket and PCM.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

6.5 to 11.0 hoursshop labor$975 to $1,800typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Mopar Transmission Dipstick Tool 10323A
  • Engine support bar/hoist
  • Subframe alignment pins
  • Transmission jack
  • Professional-grade scan tool (wiTECH or equivalent)
🔌 Wiring harness: Pay close attention to all grounding straps and wiring harness connections during reassembly to prevent electronic issues. The AWD version features specific mounting bosses and an open differential output designed to accept the PTU.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Mopar ZF 8 & 9 Speed ATF (P/N 68157995AB / 68218925AA) or equivalent ZF LifeguardFluid 9 spec fluid
  • 6.0 to 7.5 liters of transmission fluid
  • Axle shaft seals
  • Torque converter input seal
  • Professional transmission cooler and line flush

What’s involved: TCM Adaptive Relearn ('Quick Learn' procedure)

A TCM adaptive relearn is mandatory after installation to prevent extremely harsh shifts, slipping, or immediate limp-mode activation. If the TCM itself is replaced, it must be programmed with the vehicle's VIN. Reusing the original TCM is recommended when possible to avoid compatibility issues.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated and indexed (typically three distinct clicks) before bolting the transmission to the engine to avoid cracking the oil pump rotor.
  • AWD PTU Spline Greasing: Clean, inspect, and grease the mating splines with high-temperature heavy-duty spline grease when mating the PTU.
  • Fluid Level Check Temperature: Check fluid level through the side check port using special tool 10323A only when fluid temperature is between 122°F and 140°F (50°C to 60°C) as monitored via scan tool.
  • Subframe Removal: The entire front subframe must be dropped to remove the transmission, requiring engine support from above.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Ordering a FWD transmission for an AWD vehicle (the case castings and outputs are completely different).
  • Ordering for a Pacifica Hybrid model (which uses the eFlite Si-EVT transmission instead of the 948TE).
  • Using incorrect fluid such as standard ATF+4 instead of the specified Mopar ZF 8 & 9 Speed ATF.
  • Skipping the mandatory TCM Quick Learn procedure.
  • Failing to professionally flush the transmission cooler lines, leading to immediate contamination from the failed unit.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeReaction Shaft Bushing Wear (TSB 21-040-25)2017–2025

🔎 Recommended at install: Install updated service kit Mopar P/N 68732959AB if Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) performance issues or DTC P1DB7-00 occur.

minorTransmission Case Oil Leak (TSB 21-036-20)2019+

🔎 Recommended at install: Tighten the lower transmission bolts to updated torque specifications.

moderateHarsh/Jerky Shifting & Hesitation (TSB 21-008-21 / TSB 21-013-16)All years

🔎 Recommended at install: Reprogram the TCM with the latest software and perform the adaptive memory 'Quick Learn' procedure.

severeLack of Lubrication (Customer Satisfaction Notification ZD3)Certain 2022 models

🔎 Recommended at install: Internal component replacement due to bearing and pinion starvation.

severeSudden Shift to Neutral/Loss of PowerEarly models in transmission family

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-11662-5447478). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
