An Initial Learning Procedure is required after installation to calibrate the TCM to the hydraulic characteristics of the replacement unit. While the vehicle will operate without it, skipping this step can cause harsh shifting or clutch damage. The procedure can be initiated manually, but a compatible scan tool is highly recommended to monitor ATF temperature and resolve potential software mismatches (such as DTC P163E).

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

• Torque Converter Seating: The torque converter must be rotated and fully seated into the front pump gears, feeling three distinct drops. Forcing the transmission to bolt to the engine with an unseated converter will crack the front pump gears and destroy the unit.
• The Hidden Dipstick: The dipstick is a short plastic plug secured by a bolt low on the front-left side of the case. The air intake box must be removed to access it from above.
• Fluid Level Temperature Window: Fluid level must be checked with the engine idling in Park on level ground, with the fluid temperature verified via scan tool to be between 50°C and 60°C (122°F to 140°F).
• Replace/Flush the Heat Exchanger: The case-mounted cooler has very tight passages. If the original transmission suffered mechanical failure, debris will be trapped inside and must be flushed or replaced to prevent immediate contamination.
• Torque Converter Bolt Access: Access to the torque converter bolts is typically through the starter motor mounting opening, requiring starter removal.

• Using Non-OEM Transmission Fluid: Using generic multi-vehicle ATF instead of Mazda Genuine ATF FZ causes severe clutch slippage and ruins the transmission.
• Ordering a Non-Turbo Transmission: Assuming any 6-speed automatic from a CX-5 or CX-9 fits. Non-turbo models use the lighter-duty FW6A-EL, which does not bolt up to the 2.5L Turbo engine.
