Know This Transmission Before You Buy

The research behind our purchase interview — recalls, bulletins and real install economics for this transmission family:

A quick look at your own vehicle makes sure the right transmission shows up:

  • Verify the 5th and 6th digits of the VIN are TC2 (confirming AWD).
  • Verify the transmission code on the white barcode label is PYKA or MPYA.
  • Confirm the engine is the 2.0-liter Turbocharged 4-cylinder (K20C4).
🔎 Where to look: Look for a white barcode label affixed to the top or side of the transmission housing, or the stamped serial number on the metal case near the engine mating surface.

What the install really takes — plan and budget with confidence:

7-12shop labor1050-1800typical shop bill, on top of the partExpertDIY difficulty

Special tools this job needs:

  • Engine support fixture
  • Subframe adapter/jack
  • Heavy-duty transmission jack
  • OBD2 diagnostic scan tool with Honda/Acura OEM capabilities (HDS or compatible J2534 device)
🔌 Wiring harness: Ensure all integral case connectors are clean and undamaged. External wiring harnesses must be transferred from the original unit.

Budget for these consumables at install:

  • Acura/Honda ATF Type 2.0 (Do NOT use ATF Type 3.1 or DW-1)
  • Transmission Filter (Part Number: 25450-P4V-013)
  • Filter O-ring (Part Number: 91305-PN4-003)
  • Warmer/Cooler Housing O-rings (Part Numbers: 25564-5LJ-A01 and 25565-5LJ-A01)
  • Acura/Honda HGO-1 (Hypoid Gear Oil) or synthetic 75W-85 / 75W-90 gear oil for the transfer case
  • Torque converter hub seal (input shaft seal)
  • Front axle seals
  • Transmission cooler-line flush solvent

What your vehicle’s computers will need after the swap:

⚠️ Requiredprogramming / calibration⚠️ Yesdealer tool needed✅ NoECU/PCM re-marriage

What’s involved: TCM Adaptive Relearn (Clutch Estimate Relearn) and Software Calibration Check

The Transmission Control Module (TCM) must have its learned values cleared and go through a clutch adaptive learning procedure to adapt to the replacement unit. Failure to perform this will cause extremely harsh shifting, slipping, or dashboard warnings.

Pro tips for a smooth first start-up — hand them to whoever does the install:

  • Torque Converter Seating: Ensure the torque converter is fully seated into the front pump (rotating and pushing until it drops 2-3 times) before bolting to the engine to avoid cracking the internal oil pump gear.
  • Subframe & Engine Support: The front subframe must be dropped to remove/install the transmission; the engine must be supported from above.
  • AWD Transfer Case Spline Alignment: Carefully align the splines of the intermediate shaft when reinstalling the transfer case to prevent damage, and replace/lubricate the transfer case O-rings.
  • Strict Fluid Level Check Procedure: No dipstick is present. The vehicle must be level on a lift with the engine running. Monitor fluid temp via scan tool to 104°F-113°F, then open the overflow bolt on the side of the case and let fluid drain to a slow drip.
  • Filter Location: The spin-on filter is located inside the transmission warmer/cooler assembly, which must be unbolted from the case to access.

Easy to get right once you know them:

  • Using the Wrong Transmission Fluid: Using universal ATF, Honda DW-1, or ATF Type 3.1 instead of the mandatory Acura/Honda ATF Type 2.0.
  • Confusing AWD and FWD Transmissions: Ordering a FWD transmission (PYJA) for an AWD vehicle (PYKA). Always verify the 5th and 6th VIN digits are TC2.
  • Failing to Flush the Cooler Lines: Reusing contaminated cooler lines and fluid warmers, which washes debris back into the new transmission.
  • Mistaking the Fill Plug for the Level Check Plug: Misidentifying the ports, leading to severe overfilling.
  • Reusing the Old Warmer Filter: Skipping the replacement of the inline filter, which restricts fluid flow and causes overheating.

Not issues with the units on this page — the manufacturer documented these for every transmission of this family, wherever you buy one. Handy for your installer:

severeTSB 20-053 — Sudden Loss of Power / Limp Mode2019-2020

🔎 Recommended at install: Install updated intercooler assembly to prevent condensation pooling that causes engine misfires and forces transmission into limp mode.

moderateTSB 20-032 — AWD Indicator On with DTC C1843-62 or C1844-622019-2020

🔎 Recommended at install: Address internally rusted or corroded rear differential clutch linear solenoid valves.

moderateHarsh Shifting / Shift Shock (1st-to-2nd and 2nd-to-3rd gear changes when cold)2019

🔎 Recommended at install: Apply ONEpack Update #7 and subsequent TCM software updates, including clutch break-in procedure and software recalibration.

severeClass Action Lawsuit (Abel v. American Honda Motor Co.) — Sudden Deceleration / Software Glitch2019-2020

🔎 Recommended at install: Ensure PCM/TCM software is fully updated to the latest factory calibration to prevent miscommunication between engine, transmission, and throttle control computers.

🔎 Recommended at install: Full transmission replacement; often evidenced by metal shavings in the fluid at 60k-80k miles.

Researched from factory recalls, TSBs and OEM service data (reference unit 400-10922-5530242). Unit-specific details — mileage, condition, warranty, freight — are covered in the checkout interview.

Policies, in plain English.

Shipping & Handling

  • Ships by LTL freight on a pallet — a real freight truck, not a parcel van
  • Your checkout freight quote covers delivery to your door (liftgate service included for residential addresses)
  • The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window — someone must be present to receive it
  • Typically palletized and picked up within 2–3 business days; transit time depends on distance

120-Day Warranty

This part includes a 120-day warranty.

  • If the part fails within the warranty window, we'll replace it or refund per the coverage terms
  • Coverage is parts-only — installation labor is not included
  • Warranty covers defects — not installation errors, misuse, or damage after installation

Your pre-purchase interview reviews these exact terms with you before anything is charged.

Returns (30 Days)

We accept returns of uninstalled parts within 30 days of delivery for this part.

  • Defective parts: We will replace the part or issue a refund at our discretion
  • Programming: "Needs to be programmed to my vehicle" is not a valid return reason. Many modules require dealer programming — we're happy to help connect you with resources if your dealer says it's not programmable
  • Return shipping: This part ships by freight (LTL) — the part price is refundable per the terms above, but shipping costs are non-refundable and return freight follows the seller's return terms. Your pre-purchase interview walks through the exact numbers before you buy
  • Parts must be returned in original packaging and unmodified condition
  • Poorly packaged returns that arrive damaged will not be credited

Damaged in Shipping?

Freight damage is rare — and you're fully protected when you do two things at delivery:

  • Inspect before you sign — you're allowed time to look the pallet over while the driver waits
  • Write any damage on the delivery receipt before signing — that one line is what makes a freight claim succeed
  • Severe damage? Refuse the delivery — it goes back at no cost to you and we make it right
  • Photograph the pallet before unwrapping; report concealed damage within 24 hours of delivery

We handle the carrier claim — you just help document it. Your pre-purchase interview walks through this checklist too.

Order Cancellation

Cancel before shipment for a full refund. Once the pallet has been built, a preparation charge may apply — and once the freight carrier picks it up, shipping costs are non-refundable and standard return terms apply. Your pre-purchase interview shows the exact numbers before you pay.
